John 8:31

John 8:31

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

a. NLT: Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.

b. NIV: To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

c. YLT: Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, 'If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

d. Amplified Bible: So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples.

e. Worrell Translation: Jesus, therefore, said to those Jews who had believed on Him, “If ye abide in My word, ye are truly My disciples;

1. “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him…”

a. then [3767 * oun] [Strong: apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]

g. believed [4100 * pisteuo] [Strong: from 4102; to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing), i.e. credit; by implication, to entrust (especially one's spiritual well-being to Christ):--believe(-r), commit (to trust), put in trust with.] [Vine:  Vine: The main elements in faith in its relation to the invisible God, as distinct from faith in man, are especially brought out in the use of this noun (Greek: pistis) and the corresponding verb (pisteuo), they are: 1. A firm conviction producing a full acknowledgement of God’s revelation or truth [His word]. 2. A personal surrender to Him. 3. A conduct inspired by such surrender.]

2. “…If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”

c. continue [3306 * meno] [Strong: a primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy):--abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), X thine own.]

1). Being a disciple of Jesus is contingent upon continuing in his word.

a). 1 John 2:24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

b). 1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

c). 2 Timothy 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

d). Colossians 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

i. disciples [3101 * mathetes] [Strong: from 3129; a learner, i.e. pupil:--disciple.]

j. indeed [230 * alethos [Strong: adverb from 227; truly:--indeed, surely, of a surety, truly, of a (in) truth, verily, very.]

1). If we continue in God’s word we will be Jesus disciple in deeds.
