And if thy right eye offend thee,
pluck it out, and cast it from
thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and
not that thy whole body should
be cast into hell.
a. NLT: So if
your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to
be thrown into hell.
b. NIV: If your
right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown
into hell.
c. YLT: 'But, if

your right eye serves as a trap to ensnare you or is an
occasion for you to stumble and sin, pluck it out and throw it
away. It is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body

1). Albert Barnes Commentary: Pluck it
out ... - It cannot be supposed that Christ intended this to be taken
literally. His design was to teach that the dearest objects, if they cause us
to sin, are to be abandoned; that by all sacrifices and self-denials we must
overcome the evil propensities of our nature, and resist our wanton
imaginations. Some of the fathers, however, took this commandment literally.
2). Through new life in Christ and the
power of the Holy Ghost the believer can overcome sinful desire and live a
victorious life that is pleasing to God.
a). Romans 8:1-11 There is therefore
now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the
flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life
in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in
that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of
sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the righteousness of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:5 For they that are after the flesh
do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things
of the Spirit.
8:6 For to be carnally minded is
death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity
against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8:8 So then they that are in the flesh
cannot please God.
8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but
in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man
have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body
is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
8:11 But if the Spirit of him that
raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the
dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
3). In this passage Matthew 5:27-30 we
are told lust enters in through the gate of the eye. It may then lead to the
right hand causing you to stumble, perhaps through masturbation.

1). Jesus repeated similar terminology
later in Matthew’s gospel.
a). Matthew 18:6-11 But whoso shall
offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him
that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the
depth of the sea.
18:7 Woe unto the world because of
offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom
the offence cometh!
18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot
offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to
enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be
cast into everlasting fire.
18:9 And if thine eye offend thee,
pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life
with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
18:10 Take heed that ye despise not
one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do
always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
18:11 For the Son of man is come to
save that which was lost.
2). In Mark’s gospel Jesus elplains
hell a little bit further.
a). Mark 9:41-48 For whosoever shall
give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ,
verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of
these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone
were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut
it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands
to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and
the fire is not quenched.
9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut
it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to
be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and
the fire is not quenched.
9:47 And if thine eye offend thee,
pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one
eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and
the fire is not quenched.
3). Jesus is emphasizing the
seriousness of sin, he is not encouraging his disciples to literally pluck out
their eyes or cut off their limbs. Becoming a new creation in Christ
accomplishes all that is needed and then some to overcome sin in our lives. The
Apostle Paul and the other writers of the New Testament echo these truths.
a). 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Therefore if
any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold,
all things are become new.
5:18 And all things are of God, who
hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ,
reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them;
and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for
Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be
ye reconciled to God.
5:21 For he hath made him to be sin
for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
b). Romans 6:5-18 For if we have been
planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness
of his resurrection:
6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is
crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we
should not serve sin.
6:7 For he that is dead is freed from
sin.
6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we
believe that we shall also live with him:
6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised
from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
6:10 For in that he died, he died unto
sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
6:11 Likewise reckon ye also
yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ
our Lord.
6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in
your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
6:13 Neither yield ye your members as
instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as
those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of
righteousness unto God.
6:14 For sin shall not have dominion
over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
6:15 What then? shall we sin, because
we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye
yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether
of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were
the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine
which was delivered you.
6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye
became the servants of righteousness.
