Luke 3:18
And many other things in his exhortation preached
he unto the people.
a. NLT: John used many such warnings as he
announced the Good News to the people.
b. NIV: And with many other words John exhorted
the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
c. YLT: And, therefore, indeed with many other
things, exhorting, he was proclaiming good news to the people,
d. Amplified Bible: So
with many other [various] appeals and admonitions he preached the good news
(the Gospel) to the people.
e. Worrell Translation: Therefore, indeed,
exhorting them as to many and various things, he was proclaiming the good news
to the people;
1. “And many other things in his exhortation
preached he unto the people.”
a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a
primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
1). [3767 * oun] [Strong: apparently a primary
word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so,
truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily,
wherefore.]
b. many [4183 * polus] [Strong: including the
forms from the alternate pollos; (singular) much (in any respect) or (plural)
many; neuter (singular) as adverbial, largely; neuter (plural) as adverb or
noun often, mostly, largely:--abundant, + altogether, common, + far (passed,
spent), (+ be of a) great (age, deal, -ly, while), long, many, much, oft(-en
(-times)), plenteous, sore, straitly.]
c. other [2087 * heteros] [Strong: of uncertain
affinity; (an-, the) other or different:--altered, else, next (day), one,
(an-)other, some, strange.]
d. things [4183 * polus] See “”many” above.
1). [3303 * men] [Strong: a primary particle;
properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed
by a contrasted clause with 1161 (this one, the former, etc.):--even, indeed,
so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive
or asseverative sense.]
e. in his exhortation [3870 * parakaleo] [Strong:
from 3844 and 2564; to call near, i.e. invite, invoke (by imploration,
hortation or consolation):--beseech, call for, (be of good) comfort, desire,
(give) exhort(-ation), intreat, pray.]
f. preached he [2097 * euaggelizo] [Strong: from
2095 and 32; to announce good news ("evangelize") especially the
gospel:--declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the
gospel).]
1). The exhortation John preached to the people
was sometimes filled with very strong rebuke, basic hell fire and damnation,
but we must not forget it is part of the gospel.
a). Luke 3:7-9 Then said he to the
multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who
hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of
repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our
father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up
children unto Abraham.
3:9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of
the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn
down, and cast into the fire.
g. unto the people [2992 * laos] [Strong: apparently
a primary word; a people (in general; thus differing from 1218, which denotes
one's own populace):--people.]
