Luke 10:40

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

a. NLT: But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

b. NIV: But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

c. YLT: and Martha was distracted about much serving, and having stood by him, she said, 'Sir, dost thou not care that my sister left me alone to serve? say then to her, that she may partake along with me.'

d. Amplified Bible: But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!

e. Worrell Translation: But Martha was being distracted about much seving; and, coming up suddenly, she said, “Lord, carest Thou not that my sister left me to serve alone? Speak to her, therefore, that she assist me!

1. “But Martha was cumbered about much serving…”

1). There was indeed much serving, for along with Jesus and his disciples there were others who supported the entourage financially and through helps.

1). Interestingly, this Greek word is only used twice in the New Testament, here and in Romans 8:26 where it describes the ministry of the Holy Ghost in helping us pray in tongues when we don’t know what to pray.

a). Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
