Luke 13:11

Luke 13:11

And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

a. NLT: he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.

b. NIV: and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.

c. YLT: and lo, there was a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bowed together, and not able to bend back at all,

d. Amplified Bible: And there was a woman there who for eighteen years had had an infirmity caused by a spirit (a demon of sickness). She was bent completely forward and utterly unable to straighten herself up or to look upward.

e. Worrell Translation: And, behold, a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and wholly unable to raise herself up.

1. “And, behold…”

2. “…there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years…”

b. a woman [1135 * gune] [Strong: probably from the base of 1096; a woman; specially, a wife:--wife, woman.]

d. a spirit [4151 * pneuma][Strong: a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.][Thayer: used of demons, or evil spirits, who were conceived as inhabiting the bodies of men.]

e. of infirmity [769 * astheneia][Strong: feebleness (of mind or body); by implication, malady; morally, frailty:--disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness.][Thayer: want of strength, weakness, infirmity, of the body, its native weakness and frailty, feebleness of health or sickness.]

1). There are ranks of demons in the spirit world.

a). Ephesians 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

b). Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they bethrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

2). In the book of Acts the Scripture teaches that sickness and disease is demonic oppression.

a). Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

3). Later in this chapter Jesus said what this woman suffered from was satanic bondage.

a). Luke 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

4). There are spirits which cause many maladies and inspire to sin.

a). Unclean spirits: Matthew 12:43.

b). There are deaf and dumb spirits: Mark 9:25.

c). Spirits of divination: Acts 16:16.

d). Spirits that teach false doctrine: 1 Timothy 4:1.

e. Spirits that seduce men to fight against God: Revelation 16:13, 14.

f. ten [1176 * deka] [Strong: a primary number; ten:--(eight-)een, ten.]

h. eight [3638 * oktos] [Strong: a primary numeral; "eight":--eight.]

i. years [2094 * etos] [Strong:  apparently a primary word; a year:--year.]

f. in [1519 * eis] [Strong: a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with. i. lift up herself [352 * anakupto] [Strong: from 303 (in the sense of reversal) and 2955; to unbend, i.e. rise; figuratively, be elated:--lift up, look up.]
