1). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: Names: It
was called “the ark of the covenant” (Numbers 10:33; Deuteronomy 31:26; Hebrews
9:4), because in it were deposited the two tables of stone, upon which were
written the ten commandments, the terms of God’s covenant with Israel; “the ark
of the tewstimony” (Exodus 25:16, 22), the commandments being God’s testimony
respecting his own holiness and the people’s sin; “the ark of God” (1 Sanuel
3:3; 4:11), as the throne of the divine presence. (Page 88).
2). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: In its
materials, acacia wood and gold, it is a type of the humanity and diety of
Christ. Acacia wood grows in the desert and fittingly portrays Christ’s
humanity in his lowliness as a “root out of dry ground” (Isaiah 53:2). The fact
that it was overlaid with pure gold (Exodus 25:11 suggests diety in
manifestation as setting forth the divine glory. In its contents the Ark
typifies Christ as having God’s law in His heart (Exodus 25:16; 25:21). The Ark
portrays Christ in resurrection inasmuch as it contained Aaron’s rod that
budded (Numbers 17:10). The employment of the Ark, particularly the Mercy Seat,
typifies the divine throne. It was transformed from a throne of judgment to a
throne of grace as far as the erring Israelite was concerned by the blood of
atonement which was sprinkled upon it. The cherubim with outstretched wings
guarded the holiness of the Mercy Seat. The Ark was the commencement of
everything in the tabernacle symbolism. It was placed in the Holy of Hlies
showing that God begins from Him-self in His outreach toward man in revelation.
On the other hand, in the human approach the worship begins from without,
moving toward God in the very center of the holiest place. Man begins at the
Brazen Altar, that is, at the cross, where atonement is made in the light of
the fire of God’s judgment. M.F.U.
3). Dake: “The Ark symbolized the
Divine presence in all places. It served as the container of the covenant
stones which were a continual reminder of the covenant between God and Israel.
It also contained the pot of manna symbolizing the bread of God from heaven.
Aaron’s rod was placed in it later, as a witness to Israel of God’s choice of
the priesthood. The ark was placed at a middle point just inside the vail which
divided the holy place from the most holy. On the other side of the vail and
opposite the ark, the golden altar of incense was placed so that continual
incense would ascend up before the mercy seat from which God was to speak to
His people and bless or curse them as they would obey or disobey the covenant.”
