Exodus 25:17



Exodus 25:17

And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.

a. NLT: “Then make the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—from pure gold. It must be 45 inches long and 27 inches wide.

b. NIV: “Make an atonement cover of pure gold—two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide.

1. “And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold…”

a. b. a mercy seat [Strong: 3727 * kapporeth kap-po'-reth from 3722; a lid (used only of the cover of the sacred Ark):--mercy seat.]

c. of pure [Strong: 2889 * tahowr taw-hore' or tahor {taw-hore'}; from 2891; pure (in a physical, chemical, ceremonial or moral sense):--clean, fair, pure(-ness).]

d. gold [Strong: 2091 * zahab zaw-hawb' from an unused root meaning to shimmer; gold, figuratively, something gold-colored (i.e. yellow), as oil, a clear sky:-- gold(-en), fair weather.]

1). It was upon the mercy seat that symbolized the throne and presence of God that the atonement was placed.

a). Leviticus 16:11-16 And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:
16:12 And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail:
16:13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:
16:14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.
16:15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:
16:16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

2. “…two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.”

b. and a half [Strong: 2677 * chetsiy khay-tsee' from 2673; the half or middle:--half, middle, mid(-night), midst, part, two parts.]

c. shall be the length thereof [Strong: 753 * 'orek o'rek' from 748; length:--+ forever, length, long.]

d. and a cubit [Strong: 520 * 'ammah am-maw' prolonged from 517; properly, a mother (i.e. unit of measure, or the fore-arm (below the elbow), i.e. a cubit; also a door-base (as a bond of the entrance):--cubit, + hundred (by exchange for 3967), measure, post.]

e. and a half [Strong: 2677 * chetsiy khay-tsee' from 2673; the half or middle:--half, middle, mid(-night), midst, part, two parts.]

f. the breadth thereof [Strong: 7341 * rochab ro'-khab from 7337; width (literally or figuratively):--breadth, broad, largeness, thickness, wideness.]
