1 Peter 3:20

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

a. NLT: those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood

b. NIV: to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

e. waited [1551 * ekdechomai] [Strong: from 1537 and 1209; to accept from some source, i.e. (by implication) to await:--expect, look (tarry) for, wait (for).]

j. was a preparing [2680 * kataskeuazo] [Strong: from 2596 and a derivative of 4632; to prepare thoroughly (properly, by external equipment; whereas 2090 refers rather to internal fitness); by implication, to construct, create:--build, make, ordain, prepare.]

1). The identity of these spirits is I believe mentioned in this section of the verse when it describes the time as being when the ark was being built. One of the most thoughtful explanations is given by ICR.

a). Institute Of Creation Research Daily Devotional 2/10/15 Just who were these imprisoned spirits to whom Christ preached when He had been “put to death in the flesh”? This has been a controversial verse, so one should not be dogmatic in discussing it…One point often overlooked is that the word “spirits” can apply to angels as well as human beings. In fact, when it occurs in the plural, as it does here, it refers specifically to angels in at least 26 of its 30 occurrences. This strongly suggests that these were evil spirits to whom Christ was (literally) “proclaiming” the victory He had won over Satan when He had “once suffered for sins” on the cross (the same word is translated “proclaimed” in Luke 12:3—“proclaimed upon the housetops”). These fallen angels had tried to corrupt all flesh “in the days of Noah” (1 Peter 3:20; see Genesis 6:1-4, 12), and therefore had been cast “down to hell” and “delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment” (2 Peter 2:4).
But as Peter had preached on the day of Pentecost: “His soul was not left in hell... This Jesus hath God raised up” and “hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:31, 32, 36). Thus, He is now our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom some day soon “every knee should bow. . . in heaven, and. . . in earth, and . . . under the earth” (Philippians 2:10). HMM

3. “…wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.”

c. few [3641 * oligos] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; puny (in extent, degree, number, duration or value); especially neuter (adverbially) somewhat:--+ almost, brief(-ly), few, (a) little, + long, a season, short, small, a while.]

d. that is [5123 * toutesti] [Strong: contraction for 5124 and 2076; that is:--that is (to say).]
e. eight [3638 * oktos] [Strong: a primary numeral; "eight":--eight.]

f. souls [5590 * psuche] [Strong: from 5594; breath, i.e. (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from 4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from 2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew 5315, 7307 and 2416):--heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you.]

g. were saved [1295 * diasozo] [Strong: from 1223 and 4982; to save thoroughly, i.e. (by implication or analogy) to cure, preserve, rescue, etc.:--bring safe, escape (safe), heal, make perfectly whole, save.]

h. by [1223 * dia] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general importance.]

i. water [5204 * hudo, and genitive case, hudatos] [Strong: from the base of 5205; water (as if rainy) literally or figuratively:--water.]
