Galatians 5:19

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

a. NLT: When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,

b. NIV: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;

c. YLT: And manifest also are the works of the flesh, which are: Adultery, whoredom, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

1. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these…”

a. now [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. the works [2041 * ergon] [Strong: from a primary (but obsolete) ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:--deed, doing, labour, work.]

c. of the flesh [4561 * sarx] [Strong: probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).] [Vine: has a wider range of meaning in the NT than in the OT. 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

b. fornication [4202 * porneia] [Strong: from 4203; harlotry (including adultery and incest); figuratively, idolatry:--fornication.]

c. uncleanness [167 * akatharsia] [Strong: from 169; impurity (the quality), physically or morally:--uncleanness.]

d. lasciviousness [766 * aselgeia] [Strong: from a compound of 1 (as a negative particle) and a presumed selges (of uncertain derivation, but apparently meaning continent); licentiousness (sometimes including other vices):--filthy, lasciviousness, wantonness.] [Zodhiates: license, debauchery, sexual excess, absence of restraint, insatiable desire for pleasure.]
