Romans 6:17

Romans 6:17

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

a. NLT: Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.

b. NIV:  But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.

c. YLT: and thanks to God, that ye were servants of the sin, and -- were obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which ye were delivered up;

d. Amplified Bible: But thank God, though you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed.

e. Worrell Translation: But thanks be to God tht, though ye were slaves of sin, ye did, however, obey from the heart that form of teaching unto which ye were delivered;

1.  “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin…”

d. that [3754 * hoti] [Strong:  neuter of 3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.]

e. ye were [2258 * en] [Strong: imperfect of 1510; I (thou, etc.) was (wast or were):--+ agree, be, X have (+ charge of), hold, use, was(-t), were.]

f. the servants [1401 * doulos] [Strong: from 1210; a slave (literal or figurative, involuntary or voluntary; frequently, therefore in a qualified sense of subjection or subserviency):--bond(-man), servant.]

g. of sin [266 * hamartia] [Strong: from 264; a sin (properly abstract):--offence, sin(-ful).]

2. “…but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.”

f. of doctrine [1322 * didache] [Strong: from 1321; instruction (the act or the matter):--doctrine, hath been taught.]

i. was delivered you [3860 * paradidomi] [Strong: from 3844 and 1325; to surrender, i.e yield up, intrust, transmit:--betray, bring forth, cast, commit, deliver (up), give (over, up), hazard, put in prison, recommend.]

1). Belief and obedience of the gospel brings deliverance from sin.
