Isaiah 35:1

Isaiah 35:1

The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

a. NLT: Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days.
The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses.

b. NIV: The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus,

c. YLT: They joy from the wilderness and dry place, And rejoice doth the desert, and flourish as the rose,

d. Amplified Bible: The wilderness and the dry land will be glad; The Arabah (desert) will shout in exultation and blossom Like the autumn crocus.

1. “The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them…”

a. wilderness [4057 * midbar] [Strong: from 1696 in the sense of driving; a pasture (i.e. open field, whither cattle are driven); by implication, a desert; also speech (including its organs):--desert, south, speech, wilderness.]

b. and the solitary place [6723 * tsiyah tsee-yaw' from an unused root meaning to parch; aridity; concretely, a desert:--barren, drought, dry (land, place), solitary place, wilderness.]

c. shall be glad [7797 * suws, or siys] [Strong: a primitive root; to be bright, i.e. cheerful:--be glad, X greatly, joy, make mirth, rejoice.]

2. “…and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.”

a. the desert [6160 * `arabah ar-aw-baw' from 6150 (in the sense of sterility); a desert; especially (with the article prefix) the (generally) sterile valley of the Jordan and its continuation to the Red Sea:--Arabah, champaign, desert, evening, heaven, plain, wilderness.]

1). Historically, the Arabah is a distinct geographical referring to the Jordan rift valley that runs from the Sea of Galilee to the Red Sea. The modern reference is to the mostly barren area that runs from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea.

2). ARABAH, THE (Heb. הָעֲרָבָה, Aravah, Ar. al-ʿAraba; "[arid] steppe," "desert"), name of two stretches of depressed ground extending north and south of the Dead *Sea. The biblical Arabah, except in one instance, refers to the northern Arabah, i.e., the Jordan Valley from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea (which is also known as the "Sea of the Arabah"). Thus the land conquered by Moses in Transjordan included "the Arabah also, the Jordan being the border thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward" (Deut. 3:17); or more simply, "and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah" (Deut. 4:49). It was left to Joshua to conquer "the Arabah" on the other side of the Jordan (Josh. 11:16). Within the northern Arabah, the plains of Jericho are called "the Araboth [plural of Arabah] of Jericho" and those across the stream "the Araboth of Moab." b. shall rejoice [1523 * giyl, or (by permutation) guwl ] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to spin round (under the influence of any violent emotion), i.e. usually rejoice, or (as cringing) fear:--be glad, joy, be joyful, rejoice.]

1). Because of sin all of creation, plants, animals and man is in mourning.

a). Romans 8:19-22  For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
19:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
19:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
19:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

b). Hosea 4:2, 3 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

c. and blossom [6524 * parach paw-rakh' a primitive root; to break forth as a bud, i.e. bloom; generally, to spread; specifically, to fly (as extending the wings); figuratively, to flourish:--X abroad, X abundantly, blossom, break forth (out), bud, flourish, make fly, grow, spread, spring (up).]

1). In 2014 Israel’s exports of flowers totaled $84.8 million dollars. Israel: $84.8 million (0.87%)

d. as the rose [2261 * chabatstseleth] [Strong: of uncertain derivation; probably meadow-saffron:--rose.] [Gesenius: meadow-saffron, crocus, rose.] [AMG: A feminine noun denoting a rose. It refers most likely to a plant or flower of the genus asphodel and of the lily family, lily like flowers. The word stands parallel with lily in Song of Solomon 2:1]

1). This Hebrew word is only used twice in the Old Testament, here in Isaiah and again in the Song of Solomon.

a). Song of Solomon 2:1  I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

2). The restoration of the land of Israel is a sign of the soon coming of Christ.

a). Acts 3:19-21 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 3:20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
