Hebrews 2:14
Forasmuch
then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise
took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the
power of death, that is, the devil;
a. NLT: Because God’s children are human
beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as
a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the
devil, who had the power of death.
b. NIV: Since the children have flesh and blood, he
too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of
him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—
c. YLT: Seeing, then, the children have partaken of
flesh and blood, he himself also in like manner did take part of the same, that
through death he might destroy him having the power of death -- that is, the
devil --
d. Amplified Bible: Therefore, since [these His]
children share in flesh and blood [the physical nature of mankind], He Himself
in a similar manner also shared in the same [physical nature, but without sin],
so that through [experiencing] death He might make powerless (ineffective,
impotent) him who had the power of death—that is, the devil—
e. Worrell Translation: Since, therefore, the
children have partaken of blood and flesh, He Himself also in like manner took
part of the same; that, through death, He might bring to nought him that had
the power of death, that is the Devil;
1. “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood…”
a. forasmuch [1893 * epei] [Strong: from 1909 and
1487; thereupon, i.e. since (of time or cause):--because, else, for that (then,
-asmuch as), otherwise, seeing that, since, when.]
b. then [3767 * oun] [Strong: apparently a primary
word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so,
truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily,
wherefore.]
c. as the children [3813 * paidion] [Strong: neuter
diminutive of 3816; a childling (of either sex), i.e. (properly), an infant, or

the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of

spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or
(by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and
passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded),
flesh(-ly).]
f. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary
particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also,

then, therefore, when, yet.]

even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other
particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that,
then, therefore, when, yet.]
c. himself [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle
au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind)
(backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438)
of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
d. likewise [3898 * paraplesios] [Strong: adverb
from the same as 3897; in a manner near by, i.e. (figuratively)
similarly:--likewise.]
e. of the same [846 * autos] See “himself” above.
3. “…that through death he might destroy him that had the power of
death…”
a. that [2443 * hina] [Strong: probably from the
same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588);
in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the
intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]
b. through [1223 * dia] [Strong: a primary
preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications,
local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of
(that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by
reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to,
wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general importance.]

f. the power [2904 * kratos] [Strong: perhaps a
primary word; vigor ("great") (literally or figuratively):--dominion,
might(-ily), power, strength.]
g. of death [2288 * Thanatos] See “death” above.
1). Pastor Troy J. Edwards: However, one must
consider that before Jesus destroyed him, the devil had power over death,
(Hebrews 2:14). Whether one believes He died a spiritual death as well as
physical or if one believes He only died physically, the fact of the matter is
that He died. If the Lord died in any kind manner, He suffered in some way under Satan’s
dominion. He did this voluntarily knowing full well what he was doing. Romans
5:17 tells us that death reigned after Adam sinned. Therefore if death had
ruled over men and it had our Lord in its grip (again I mention that this was
voluntary), then it is not unscriptural to say that for some amount of time
death had our Lord in its grip and under its dominion.
a). Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the
pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
4. “…that is, the devil;”
a. that is [5123 * toutesti] [Strong: contraction
for 5124 and 2076; that is:--that is (to say).]
b. he devil [1228 * diabolos] [Strong: from 1225; a
traducer; specially, Satan (compare 7854):--false accuser, devil, slanderer.]
