1 Corinthians 12:8


For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

1. “For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom…”

a. For [Strong: 1063. gar gar a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]


b. [to] one [Strong: 3739. hos hos, including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]


c. [Strong: 3303. men men a primary particle; properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with 1161 (this one, the former, etc.):--even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive or asseverative sense.]


d. [tou] ὁ ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [tou] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. g. Spirit [Strong: 4151. pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.]


h. [the] word [Strong: 3056. logos log'-os from 3004; something said (including the thought); by implication, a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (i.e. Christ):--account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say(-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.]

i. [of] wisdom [Strong: 4678. sophia sof-ee'-ah from 4680; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual):--wisdom.]


1). Kenneth Hagin, Concerning Spiritual Gifts: There were supernatural manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. In fact, they had all the gifts in operation in Old testament times  except tongues and interpretation of tongues. The gifts were first mentioned in the New Testament under the ministry of Jesus. Then after the day of Pentecost tongues and interpretation of tongues were manifested as well as the others.


2). Kenneth Hagin, Concerning Spiritual Gifts: In the Old Testament Joseph received a word of wisdom through a dream which revealed to him God’s plan and purpose for his future (Genesis 37:5-11).


3). Examples of the Word of Wisdom in the book of Acts.


a). Acts 11:27-30 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

11:28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

11:29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

11:30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.


b). Acts 21:10, 11 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

21:11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.


2. “...to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;”

The prophet Elijah had a great time up on the mountaintop when he prayed fire down from heaven. But when someone told him, “Queen Jezebel said that by this time tomorrow she is going to have your head off your shoulders,” Elijah became worried and fearful. He sat down under a juniper tree and begged God to let him die. He told God “Everybody is backslididden but me. Everybody has bowed their knee to Baal and I am the only one left.” But God gave him a word that encouraged him (1 Kings 19:1-18).
