And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

1. “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting…”

i. surfeiting [Strong: 2897. kraipale krahee-pal'-ay probably from the same as 726; properly, a headache (as a seizure of pain) from drunkenness, i.e. (by implication) a debauch (by analogy, a glut):--surfeiting.]


2. “...and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.”


a. and [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


b. drunkenness [Strong: 3178. methe meth'-ay apparently a primary word; an intoxicant, i.e. (by implication) intoxication:--drunkenness.]


1). Alcohol removes guardrails. There are lines individuals cross under the influence of alcohol that they would never cross if sober. Examples of alcohol influence.

e. [of this] life [Strong: 982. biotikos bee-o-tee-kos' from a derivative of 980; relating to the present existence:--of (pertaining to, things that pertain to) this life.]


1). In the Parable of the Sower, cares of this life is mentioned as one of the factors that will prevent a believer from producing fruit. The cares of this life is described by Christ Jesus as thorn that will choke the word out of our lives.


a).  Matthew 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.


b). Mark 4:18, 19 “And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.”


c). Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.


2). God warned Moses and Joshua concerning things that will become thorns.


a).  Numbers 33:50-56 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
33:51 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
33:52 Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:
33:53 And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it.
33:54 And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.
33:55 But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
33:56 Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.


b).  Joshua 23:11-13 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.
23:12 Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
23:13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

i. day [Strong: 2250. hemera hay-mer'-ah feminine (with 5610 implied) of a derivative of hemai (to sit; akin to the base of 1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):--age, + alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]

j. overtake [Strong: 2186. ephistemi ef-is'-tay-mee from 1909 and 2476; to stand upon, i.e. be present (in various applications, friendly or otherwise, usually literal); --assault, come (in, to, unto, upon), be at hand (instant), present, stand (before, by, over).]


k. you [Strong: 5209. humas hoo-mas' accusative case of 5210; you (as the objective of a verb or preposition):--ye, you (+ -ward), your (+ own).


l. unawares [Strong: 160. aiphnidios aheef-nid'-ee-os from a compound of 1 (as a negative particle) and 5316 (compare 1810) (meaning non-apparent); unexpected, i.e. (adverbially) suddenly:--sudden, unawares.]
