For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

1. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”


a. For [Strong: 1063. gar gar a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]


b. as [Strong: 5618. hosper hoce'-per from 5613 and 4007; just as, i.e. exactly like:--(even, like) as.

1). Genesis 2:15-17 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.


a). This was a direct command, there was no mystery to it. This is why 1 Timothy 2:14 declares “And Adam was not deceived,…” Adam knew exactly what he was doing.

 

b). The Hebrew word for death and a derivative of it are used as the two last words in this verse. There are two deaths implied as to the result of disobedience to this command which are borne out by what happened. Adam died spiritually the moment he ate the fruit, but he did not die physically for 930 years (Genesis 5:5). Adam died physically only because he had already died spiritually.

 

c). The marginal note in my Cambridge Bible reads “dying thou shalt die”.

 

2). Death is separation.

 

a). Physical death is separation of the spirit from the body.

 

(1) James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

 

b). Spiritual death is separation of man’s spirit from God. Spiritual death is also a nature, the nature of Satan.

 

(1) Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

 

(2) Ephesians 2:2, 3 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

 

(3) Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

 

c). The Second death is eternal separation of mans spirit from God:

 

(1) Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

 

3). When Adam and Eve sinned against God, spiritual and physical death passed on to every man and woman born on this planet.

 

a). Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

 

4). This is why man has to be born again, he has to experience the new birth through Christ Jesus.


g. even [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


h. so [Strong: 3779. houto hoo'-to, or (before a vowel houtos hoo'-toce adverb from 3778; in this way (referring to what precedes or follows):--after that, after (in) this manner, as, even (so), for all that, like(-wise), no more, on this fashion(-wise), so (in like manner), thus, what.]
