Romans
7:19
For the good that I would I do not:
but the evil which I would not, that I do.
a. NLT: I want to
do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it
anyway.
b. NIV: For I do
not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on
doing.
c. YLT: for the
good that I will, I do not; but the evil that I do not will, this I practise.
d. Amplified Bible
Classic: For I fail to practice the good deeds I desire
to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am [ever]
doing.
e. Worrell
Translation: For the good that I wish, I do not; but the evil which I wish not,
this I practice.
1. “For the good that I would I do
not…”
a. for [1063 * gar]
[Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument,
explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because
(that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily,
what, why, yet.]
b. [3739 *
hos; including feminine he,
and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the
article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which,
what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se),
etc.]
c. the good [18 * agathos]
[Strong: a primary word; "good" (in any sense, often as
noun):--benefit, good(-s, things), well.]
d. that I would [2309
* thelo; or ethelo, theleo and etheleo] [Strong: which are otherwise obsolete
apparently strengthened from the alternate form of 138; to determine (as an
active option from subjective impulse; whereas 1014 properly denotes rather a
passive acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose or prefer
(literally or figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to
(sometimes adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about
to; by Hebraism, to delight in:--desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list,
love, mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, - ling(-ly)).]
e. I do [4160 *
poieo] [Strong: apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete primary; to make or
do (in a very wide application, more or less direct):--abide, + agree, appoint,
X avenge, + band together, be, bear, + bewray, bring (forth), cast out, cause,
commit, + content, continue, deal, + without any delay, (would) do(-ing),
execute, exercise, fulfil, gain, give, have, hold, X journeying, keep, + lay
wait, + lighten the ship, make, X mean, + none of these things move me,
observe, ordain, perform, provide, + have purged, purpose, put, + raising up, X
secure, shew, X shoot out, spend, take, tarry, + transgress the law, work,
yield.]
f. not [ 3756 * ou,
also (before a vowel) ouk, and (before an aspirate) ouch] [Strong:
a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+
long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special,
un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]
2. “…but the evil which I would not,
that I do.”
a. but but [235 *
alla] [Strong: neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially)
contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay,
nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]
b. the evil [2556 *
kakos] [Strong: apparently a primary word; worthless (intrinsically, such;
whereas 4190 properly refers to effects), i.e. (subjectively) depraved, or
(objectively) injurious:--bad, evil, harm, ill, noisome, wicked.]
c. which [3739 *
hos; including feminine he,
and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the
article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which,
what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se),
etc.]
d. I would [2309 * thelo;
or ethelo, theleo and etheleo] [Strong: which are otherwise obsolete apparently
strengthened from the alternate form of 138; to determine (as an active option
from subjective impulse; whereas 1014 properly denotes rather a passive
acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose or prefer (literally or
figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes
adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by
Hebraism, to delight in:--desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love,
mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, - ling(-ly)).]
e. not [ 3756 * ou,
also (before a vowel) ouk, and (before an aspirate) ouch] [Strong:
a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+
long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special,
un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]
f. that [5124 *
touto] [Strong: neuter singular nominative or accusative case of 3778; that
thing:--here (-unto), it, partly, self(-same), so, that (intent), the same,
there(-fore, -unto), this, thus, where(-fore).]
g. I do [4238 *
prasso] [Strong: a primary verb; to "practise", i.e. perform
repeatedly or habitually (thus differing from 4160, which properly refers to a
single act); by implication, to execute, accomplish, etc.; specially, to
collect (dues), fare (personally):--commit, deeds, do, exact, keep, require,
use arts.]
