Romans 5:10

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

a. NLT: For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.

b. NIV: For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

c. YLT: for if, being enemies, we have been reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved in his life.

d. Amplified Bible Classic:  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, it is much more [certain], now that we are reconciled, that we shall be saved (daily delivered from sin’s dominion) through His [^[g]resurrection] life.

1. “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son…”

i. of his [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

j. Son [5207 * huios] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

1). The reconciliation between God and us was accomplished by the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus before we were born. Between us and God there was enemity, but between God and us there was none. The resurrection of Christ occurred because we were declared justified.

a). Romans 4:25-5:1 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2). This was all accomplished by God through Jesus we had nothing to do to help it along. The justification and the faith that produced it was God’s doing not ours. It was His faith not our’s. When the Scripture says “therefore being justified by faith” it is not our faith it was God’s faith securing our justification through what Jesus did.

2. “…much more, being reconciled,

a. much [4183 * polus] [Strong: including the forms from the alternate pollos; (singular) much (in any respect) or (plural) many; neuter (singular) as adverbial, largely; neuter (plural) as adverb or noun often, mostly, largely:--abundant, + altogether, common, + far (passed, spent), (+ be of a) great (age, deal, -ly, while), long, many, much, oft(-en (-times)), plenteous, sore, straitly.]

b. more [3123 * mallon] [Strong: neuter of the comparative of the same as 3122; (adverbially) more (in a greater degree)) or rather:--+ better, X far, (the) more (and more), (so) much (the more), rather.]

c. being reconciled [2644 * katallasso] [Strong: from 2596 and 236; to change mutually, i.e. (figuratively) to compound a difference:--reconcile.]

1). This is referring to believers, those who are in Christ, after the new birth. From the establishment of the New Covenant, the enmity was between us and God, not between God and us. When we enter the new birth, the reconciliation was complete, on both sides. We then enter into the ministry of spreading that reconciliation to the rest of mankind.

a). 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

3. “…we shall be saved by his life.”

a. [we shall be] saved [4982 * sozo] [Strong: from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.] [Zodhiates: to save, deliver, make whole, preserve safe from danger, loss, destruction…Sozo occurs fifty-four times in the Gospels [fifty-six in the KJV]. Of the instances where sozo is used, fourteen relate to deliverance from disease or demon possession; in twenty instances, the inference is to the rescue of physical life from some impending peril or instant death; the remaining twenty times, the reference is to spiritual salvation.]

1). As the Greek definition reveals, being “saved” means more than just going to heaven, in includes our lives here on earth after the born again experience. It refers to all the promises of the New Covenant, everything we have “in Christ”.

1). This is referring to us, through the grace of God yielding to Christ living his life through us.

a). Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
