Romans
7:20
Now if I do that I would not, it is
no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
a. NLT: But if I do
what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living
in me that does it.
b. NIV: Now if I do
what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in
me that does it.
c. YLT: And if what
I do not will, this I do, it is no longer I that work it, but the sin that is
dwelling in me.
d. Amplified Bible
Classic: Now if I do what I do not desire to do, it is no longer I doing it [it
is not myself that acts], but the sin [principle] which dwells within me [fixed
and operating in my soul].
e. Worrell
Translation: But, if what I wish not, this I do, it is no more I that perform
it, but the sin that is dwelling in me.
1. “Now if I do that I would not…”
a. now [1161 * de]
[Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and,
etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]
b. if [1487 * ei]
[Strong: a primary particle of conditionality; if, whether, that,
etc.:--forasmuch as, if, that, (al-)though, whether.]
c. I do [4160 *
poieo] [Strong: apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete primary; to make or
do (in a very wide application, more or less direct):--abide, + agree, appoint,
X avenge, + band together, be, bear, + bewray, bring (forth), cast out, cause,
commit, + content, continue, deal, + without any delay, (would) do(-ing),
execute, exercise, fulfil, gain, give, have, hold, X journeying, keep, + lay
wait, + lighten the ship, make, X mean, + none of these things move me,
observe, ordain, perform, provide, + have purged, purpose, put, + raising up, X
secure, shew, X shoot out, spend, take, tarry, + transgress the law, work,
yield.]
d. that [5124 *
touto] [Strong: neuter singular nominative or accusative case of 3778; that
thing:--here (-unto), it, partly, self(-same), so, that (intent), the same,
there(-fore, -unto), this, thus, where(-fore).]
e. I [1473 * ego]
[Strong: a primary pronoun of the first person I (only expressed when
emphatic):--I, me.]
f. would [2309 * thelo;
or ethelo, theleo and etheleo] [Strong: which are otherwise obsolete apparently
strengthened from the alternate form of 138; to determine (as an active option
from subjective impulse; whereas 1014 properly denotes rather a passive
acquiescence in objective considerations), i.e. choose or prefer (literally or
figuratively); by implication, to wish, i.e. be inclined to (sometimes
adverbially, gladly); impersonally for the future tense, to be about to; by
Hebraism, to delight in:--desire, be disposed (forward), intend, list, love,
mean, please, have rather, (be) will (have, -ling, - ling(-ly)).]
g. not [ 3756 * ou,
also (before a vowel) ouk, and (before an aspirate) ouch] [Strong:
a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+
long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special,
un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]
2. “…it is no more I that do it…”
a. it is no more [2089
* eti] [Strong: perhaps akin to 2094; "yet," still (of time or
degree):--after that, also, ever, (any) further, (t-)henceforth (more),
hereafter, (any) longer, (any) more(-one), now, still, yet.]
b. no more [3765 * ouketi;
also (separately) ouk eti] [Strong: from 3756 and 2089; not yet, no
longer:--after that (not), (not) any more, henceforth (hereafter) not, no
longer (more), not as yet (now), now no more (not), yet (not).]
c. I [1473 * ego]
[Strong: a primary pronoun of the first person I (only expressed when
emphatic):--I, me.]
d. that do [2716 * katergazomai]
[Strong: from 2596 and 2038; to work fully, i.e. accomplish; by implication, to
finish, fashion:--cause, to (deed), perform, work (out).]
e. it [846 * autos]
[Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea
of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in
the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal
pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own,
said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that,
their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they,
(these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.
3. “…but sin that dwelleth in me.”
a. but [235 * alla]
[Strong: neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially)
contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay,
nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]
b. sin [266 * hamartia]
[Strong: from 264; a sin (properly abstract):--offence, sin(-ful).]
c. that dwelleth [3611
* oikeo] [Strong: from 3624; to occupy a house, i.e. reside (figuratively,
inhabit, remain, inhere); by implication, to cohabit:--dwell.]
d. in [1722 * en]
[Strong: a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or
state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e.
a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at,
(up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as,
at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self
wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on,
(open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X
there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with),
while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import;
rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except
(elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]
e. me [1698 * emoi]
[Strong: a prolonged form of 3427; to me:--I, me, mine, my.]
1). The law of sin
and death dwells in man woman and child, because of the sin of Adam and Eve.
a). Romans 5:12 Wherefore,
as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed
upon all men, for that all have sinned:
b). 1 Peter 1:18 Forasmuch
as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver
and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition
from your fathers;
c). As the passage
continues, we will find that the only way to overcome that law is through the
grace given at the New Birth.
