1 Chronicles 12:13

So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

a. NLT: So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD. He failed to obey the LORD’s command, and he even consulted a medium

b. NIV: Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,

c. YLT: And Saul dieth because of his trespass that he trespassed against Jehovah, against the word of Jehovah that he kept not, and also for asking at a familiar spirit -- to inquire, --

1. “So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord…”

a. Saul [7586 * Sha'uwl] [Strong: passive participle of 7592; asked; Shaul, the name of an Edomite and two Israelites:--Saul, Shaul.]

b. died [4191 * muwth] [Strong: a primitive root: to die (literally or figuratively); causatively, to kill:--X at all, X crying, (be) dead (body, man, one), (put to, worthy of) death, destroy(-er), (cause to, be like to, must) die, kill, necro(-mancer), X must needs, slay, X surely, X very suddenly, X in (no) wise.]

c. for his transgression [4604 * ma`al mah'-al from 4603; treachery, i.e. sin:--falsehood, grievously, sore, transgression, trespass, X very.]

d. which he committed against [4603 * ma`al] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to cover up; used only figuratively, to act covertly, i.e. treacherously:--transgress, (commit, do a) trespass(-ing).]

2. “…even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not…”

1). There are three specific incidents where Saul violated the commandment of God. The first two are Saul intruding into the Priestly office by offering a burnt offering, and the second his failure to obey in the slaughter of the Amalakites.

a). 1 Samuel 13:8-14 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

13:9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

13:10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

13:11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

13:12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

13:13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

13:14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.

3. “…and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;”

a. and also for asking counsel [7592 * sha'al; or shael] [Strong: a primitive root; to inquire; by implication, to request; by extension, to demand:--ask (counsel, on), beg, borrow, lay to charge, consult, demand, desire, X earnestly, enquire, + greet, obtain leave, lend, pray, request, require, + salute, X straitly, X surely, wish.]

b. of one that had a familiar spirit [178 * 'owb] [Strong: from the same as 1 (apparently through the idea of prattling a father's name); properly, a mumble, i.e. a water skin (from its hollow sound); hence a necromancer (ventriloquist, as from a jar):--bottle, familiar spirit.]

c. to enquire of it [1875 * darash] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to tread or frequent; usually to follow (for pursuit or search); by implication, to seek or ask; specifically to worship:--ask, X at all, care for, X diligently, inquire, make inquisition, (necro-)mancer, question, require, search, seek (for, out), X surely.]

1). The next specific violation was when Saul enquired counsel from a witch who had a familiar spirit.
