2 Samuel 9:7

2 Samuel 9:7

And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

a. NLT: “Don’t be afraid!” David said. “I intend to show kindness to you because of my promise to your father, Jonathan. I will give you all the property that once belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will eat here with me at the king’s table!”

b. NIV: “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”

c. YLT: And David saith to him, 'Be not afraid; for I certainly do with thee kindness because of Jonathan thy father, and have given back to thee all the field of Saul thy father, and thou dost eat bread at my table continually.'

1). David and Jonathan had entered into covenant previous to David ever becoming king and David had sworn to Jonathan that he would show kindness to Jonathan’s descendants.

a). 1 Samuel 20:14, 15 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:
20:15 But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

b). Most Bible scholars, including Jewish scholars, teach that Jonathan knew that David was going to become king. The covenant promise that Jonathan was wanting from David is that David would be kind to his descendants after Jonathan’s death.

 2. “…and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father…”

Fausset and David Brown Commentary:  Saul's family estate, which had fallen to David in right of his wife (Numbers 27:8)…was provided (2 Samuel 9:11; also 2 Samuel 19:28), for enabling Mephibosheth to maintain an establishment suitable to his rank, and Ziba appointed steward to manage it, on the condition of receiving one-half of the produce in remuneration for his labor and expense, while the other moiety was to be paid as rent to the owner of the land (2 Samuel 19:29).

3. “…and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.”
