1 Kings 11:1

1 Kings 11:1

But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites:

a. NLT: Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.

b. NIV: King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.

c. YLT: And king Solomon hath loved many strange women, and the daughter of Pharaoh, females of Moab, Ammon, Edom, Zidon, and of the Hittites,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: But King Solomon [defiantly] loved many foreign women—the[a]daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites.

e. Septuagint: And king Solomon was a lover of women. And he took strange women, as well as the daughter of Pharao, Moabitish, Ammanitish women, Syrians and Idumeans, Chettites, and Amorites;

f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: King Solomon loved many foreign women, in addition to the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites.

1. “But king Solomon loved many strange women…”

1). In the instructions that God gave to Moses, the king whoever he may be was not to have many wives.

a).  Deuteronomy 17:17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

2). Obviously Solomon did not obey this commandment, and it is evident from the last verses in the passage that God had told Solomon about this.

a). 1 Kings 11:9, 10 And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,
And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the Lord commanded.

3). As far as I know Nehemiah is the only Jewish leader recorded in Scripture who chastises Solomon for his fornication, and it is 5 centuries later.

a). Nehemiah 13:23-26 In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:
13:24 And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.
13:25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.
13:26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

4). It must be said that although David also broke the commandment in Deuteronomy concerning many wives (He had at least 8 that are named but there were more wives and concubines), they did not lead his heart astray from serving God. Solomon did.

1). The Moabite women persuaded Solomon to worship Chemosh (1 Kings 11:7).
