1). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: In the first vers of
his prophecy it is stated that “the word of the LORD came unto Hosea, in the
days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah,
and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.” Dr. J. F.
McCurdy dates the beginning of Hosea’s public life at 748 B.C., and Hezekiah’s
death at 690 B.C. which would make the prophet’s ministry extend over a period
of about 58 years.
2). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: The span of his
ministry: This is indicated in the superscription to the book: “…in the days of
Uzziah (767-739 B.C.), Jotham (739-735 B.C.), Ahaz (735-715 B.C.), and Hezekiah
(715-686 B.C.), kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam II (781-753 B.C) the
son of Joash, king of Israel” (Hosea 1:1). The prophetic ministry of Hosea extended
well beyod Jereboam II’s death into the period of civil war in which Zachariah (753
B.C.), Shallum (752 B.C.), Menahem (752-741 B.C.), Pekahiah (741-739 B.C.),
Pekah (739-731 B.C.), and Hoshea (731-722 B.C.) reigned, until the fall of
Samaria.
