Hosea 3:4

Hosea 3:4

For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:

a. NLT: This shows that Israel will go a long time without a king or prince, and without sacrifices, sacred pillars, priests,[fn] or even idols!

b. NIV: For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods.

c. YLT: For many days remain do the sons of Israel without a king, and there is no prince, and there is no sacrifice, and there is no standing pillar, and there is no ephod and teraphim.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: For the children of Israel shall dwell and sit deprived many days, without king or prince, without sacrifice or [idolatrous] pillar, and without ephod [a garment worn by priests when seeking divine counsel] or teraphim (household gods).

e. Septuagint: For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an altar, and without a priesthood, and without manifestations.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: For many days the Children of Israel will sit with no king, no officer, no sacrifice, no pillar, no ephod or teraphim.

1). Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown Commentary: The long period here foretold was to be one in which Israel should have no civil polity, king, or prince, no sacrifice to Jehovah, and yet no idol, or false god, no ephod, or teraphim. Exactly describing their state for the last nineteen centuries, separate from idols, yet without any legal sacrifice to Jehovah, whom they profess to worship, and without being acknowledged by Him as His Church. [What is interesting about the above commentary is it was written in 1882. In 1948 66 years after this commentary was written, Israel became a nation again.]

2). Adam Clarke Commentary: Hitherto this prophecy has been literally fulfilled. Since the destruction of the temple by the Romans they have neither had king nor prince, nor any civil government of their own, but have lived in different nations of the earth as mere exiles. They have neither priests nor sacrifices nor urim nor thummim; no prophet, no oracle, no communication of any kind from God. [This commentary was written in 1831 185 years ago. 117 years later in 1948, Israel was made a nation again.]

1). We are now in the “Afterward shall the children of Israel return…” part of this amazing prophecy. Israel is brought back but Israel is in unbelief at this time.

2). See Ezekiel 36:24, 25; Jeremiah 16:14-18; Ezekiel 37:1-14.
