Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

1. “Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,”

a. [Then] Jonah [Strong: 3124 Yonah yo-naw' the same as 3123; Jonah, an Israelite:--Jonah.]

b. prayed [Strong: 6419 palal paw-lal' a primitive root; to judge (officially or mentally); by extension, to intercede, pray:--intreat, judge(-ment), (make) pray(-er, -ing), make supplication.]

c. unto [Strong: 413 'el ale (but only used in the shortened constructive form sel {el}); a primitive particle; properly, denoting motion towards, but occasionally used of a quiescent position, i.e. near, with or among; often in general, to:--about, according to ,after, against, among, as for, at, because(-fore, -side), both...and, by, concerning, for, from, X hath, in(- to), near, (out) of, over, through, to(-ward), under, unto, upon, whether, with(-in).]

g. belly [Strong: 4578 me`ah may-aw' from an unused root probably meaning to be soft; used only in plural the intestines, or (collectively) the abdomen, figuratively, sympathy; by implication, a vest; by extens. the stomach, the uterus (or of men, the seat of generation), the heart (figuratively):--belly, bowels, X heart, womb.]

1). After he had been swallowed by the fish, he prayed. Dake’s Bible notes teach that Jonah prayed from the belly of the fish and from hell (Jonah 2:2). Dake believes that after Jonah was swallowed by the fish that he died and went to hell. This school of thought teaches that in order to be a faithful type he had to die because Christ Jesus died and went to hell.
