For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

1. “For a small moment have I forsaken thee…”

a. [For a] small [Strong: 6996 qatan kaw-tawn' or qaton {kaw-tone'}; from 6962; abbreviated, i.e. diminutive, literally (in quantity, size or number) or figuratively (in age or importance):--least, less(-er), little (one), small(-est, one, quantity, thing), young(-er, -est).]

b. moment [Strong: 7281 rega` reh'-gah from 7280. a wink (of the eyes), i.e. a very short space of time:--instant, moment, space, suddenly.

c. [hav I] forsaken thee [Strong: 5800 `azab aw-zab' a primitive root; to loosen, i.e. relinquish, permit, etc.:--commit self, fail, forsake, fortify, help, leave (destitute, off), refuse, X surely.]

1). Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible: For a small moment have I forsaken thee,.... The people of God seem to be forsaken by him when he hides his face from them, as it is afterwards explained; when they are in distress, and he does not immediately appear for them; when they are afflicted in body and mind, though these afflictions are but for a moment; nor are they really forsaken, not as to things temporal or spiritual; God never forsakes the work of his own hands, nor his people, at least for ever, or so as that they shall perish. Some interpret this of the seventy years' captivity of the Jews in Babylon, which was but a very short time; others of the times of ignorance in the Gentile world before the coming of Christ, which God winked at, when he overlooked them, and took no notice of them; but I choose to understand it of the time and state of the Christian church, during the ten persecutions of Rome Pagan, when it seemed to be forsaken of God, and to be triumphed over by her enemies:

2). Don Costello: In my reasoning this is pointing toward two applications, the first being the immediate of the 70 year Babylonian exile and the second being the context of after the 2000 year church age when Christ our redeemer is not acknowledged by israel.  

2. “...but with great mercies will I gather thee.”

b. mercies [Strong: 7356 racham rakh'-am from 7355; compassion (in the plural); by extension, the womb (as cherishing the fetus); by implication, a maiden:-- bowels, compassion, damsel, tender love, (great, tender) mercy, pity, womb.]

c. [will I] gather thee [Strong: 6908 qabats kaw-bats' a primitive root; to grasp, i.e. collect:--assemble (selves), gather (bring) (together, selves together, up), heap, resort, X surely, take up.
