Colossians 2:11
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made
without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the
circumcision of Christ:
a. NLT: When you came to Christ,
you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a
spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature.
b. NIV: In him you were also
circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self
ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ,
c. YLT: in whom also ye were
circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the
body of the sins of the flesh in the circumcision of the Christ,
d. Amplified Bible: In Him you
were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, but by the [spiritual]
circumcision of Christ in the stripping off of the body of the flesh [the
sinful carnal nature],
e. Worrell Translation: in Whom ye
were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hand, in putting off of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision
of Christ.
1. “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision
made without hands…”
a. In [1722 * en] [Strong: a
primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and
(by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation
of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by,
etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before,
between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to,
(here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X
outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on),
through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in).
Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs
of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a
separate (and different) preposition.]
b. whom [3739 * hos, including
feminine he and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or
perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative)
pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what,
which, who(-m, -se), etc.]
c. also [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
d. ye are circumcised [4059 * peritemno] [Strong:
from 4012 and the base of 5114; to cut around, i.e. (specially) to
circumcise:--circumcise.]
e. with the circumcision [4061 * peritome] [Strong:
from 4059; circumcision (the rite, the condition or the people, literally or
figuratively):--X circumcised, circumcision.]
f. made without hands [886 * acheiropoietos] [Strong: from
1 (as a negative particle) and 5499; unmanufactured, i.e. inartificial:--made
without (not made with) hands.]
1). The means of entering into the
Old Covenant was by physical circumcision.
a). Genesis 17:9-14 And God said
unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after
thee in their generations.
17:10 This is my covenant, which
ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child
among you shall be circumcised.
17:11 And ye shall circumcise the
flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and
you.
17:12 And he that is eight days
old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he
that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not
of thy seed.
17:13 He that is born in thy
house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my
covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
17:14 And the uncircumcised man
child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut
off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
2). The circumcision that Paul is
writing of is a spiritual circumcision in the human spirit.
a). Romans 2:28, 29 For he is not
a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward
in the flesh:
2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one
inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the
letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
3). Paul is describing the born
again experience, the new birth.
a). 2 Corinthians 5:17, 18 Therefore if any
man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
5:18 And all things are of God,
who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
2. “…in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh:”
a. in [1722 * en] [Strong: a
primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and
(by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation
of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by,
etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before,
between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to,
(here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X
outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on),
through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in).
Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs
of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a
separate (and different) preposition.]
b. putting off [555 * apekdusis] [Strong:
from 554; divestment:--putting off.]
c. the body [4983 * soma] [Strong:
from 4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application,
literally or figuratively:--bodily, body, slave.]
d. of the sins [266 * hamartia] [Strong: from
264; a sin (properly abstract):--offence, sin(-ful).]
e. of the flesh [4561 * sarx] [Strong:
probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e.
(strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as
opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as
the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties
(physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as
such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).]
1). The “body of the sins of the
flesh” is also referred to as “the law of sin and death”. It is described by
Paul in Romans 7. It is the condition of the human spirit without God since the
fall of man.
a). Romans 7:14-24 For we know
that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
7:15 For that which I do I allow
not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
7:16 If then I do that which I
would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
7:17 Now then it is no more I that
do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:18 For I know that in me (that
is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but
how to perform that which is good I find not.
7:19 For the good that I would I
do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
7:20 Now if I do that I would not,
it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:21 I find then a law, that, when
I would do good, evil is present with me.
7:22 For I delight in the law of
God after the inward man:
7:23 But I see another law in my
members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to
the law of sin which is in my members.
7:24 O wretched man that I am! who
shall deliver me from the body of this death?
2). When Adam and Eve sinned in the
garden because they were the parents of the whole human race, we were sold into
sin and we became servants to sin.
a). Romans 6:16 Know
ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are
to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
3). When the law of sin and death
entered our spirits we also became the children of wrath.
a). Ephesians 2:2, 3 Wherein in
time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of
disobedience:
2:3 Among whom also we all had our
conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of
the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as
others.
3. “…by the circumcision of Christ:”
a. by [1722 * en] See “in” above.
b. the circumcision [4061 * peritome] [Strong:
from 4059; circumcision (the rite, the condition or the people, literally or
figuratively):--X circumcised, circumcision.]
c. of Christ [5547 * Christos]
][Strong: from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]
1). Through the circumcision of
Christ “the body of the sins of the flesh”, “the law of sin and death” no
longer has power over us, it no longer has us in its grip. We have been
delivered out of the kingdom of darkness.
a). Colossians 1:12-14 Giving
thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the
inheritance of the saints in light:
1:13 Who hath delivered us from
the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
1:14 In whom we have redemption
through his blood, even the
forgiveness of sins:
2). Through the power of the Holy
Spirit we can overcome the law of sin and death.
a). Romans 8:2 For the law of the
Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
