John 17:2
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that
he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
a. NLT: For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives
eternal life to each one you have given him.
b. NIV: For you granted him authority over all people that he might
give eternal life to all those you have given him.
c. YLT: according as Thou didst give to him authority over all flesh,
that -- all that Thou hast given to him -- he may give to them life age-during;
d. Amplified Bible: ust as You have given Him power and authority
over all mankind, [now glorify Him] so that He may give eternal life to
all whom You have given Him [to be His—permanently and forever].
e. Worrell Translation: even as Thou gavest Him authority over all
flesh, that to all Whom Thou hast given Him He should give eternal life.
1. “As thou hast given him power over all flesh…”
a. as [2531 * kathos] [Strong: from 2596 and 5613; just (or inasmuch)
as, that:--according to, (according, even) as, how, when.]
b. thou hast given [1325 * didomi] [Strong: a prolonged form of a
primary verb (which is used as an alternative in most of the tenses); to give
(used in a very wide application, properly, or by implication, literally or
figuratively; greatly modified by the connection):--adventure, bestow, bring
forth, commit, deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number,
offer, have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+
with the palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.]
c. him [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the
base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive
pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and
(with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one,
the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self,
(your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in,
-into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together,
very, which.]
d. power [1849 * exousia] [Strong: from 1832 (in the sense of ability);
privilege, i.e. (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or
(objectively) mastery (concretely, magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of
control), delegated influence:--authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right,
strength.]
e. over all [3956 * pas] [Strong: including all the forms of
declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner
of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many
as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
f. flesh [4561 * sarx] [Strong: probably from the base of 4563; flesh
(as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or
(by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol
of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human
nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or
(specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).]
2. “…that he should give eternal life to as many as
thou hast given him.”
a. that [2443 * hina] [Strong: probably from the same as the former
part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that
(denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that),
lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]
b. he should give [1325 * didomi] [Strong: a prolonged form of a
primary verb (which is used as an alternative in most of the tenses); to give
(used in a very wide application, properly, or by implication, literally or

offer, have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+
with the palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.]
c. eternal [166 * aionios] [Strong: from 165; perpetual (also used of
past time, or past and future as well):--eternal, for ever, everlasting, world
(began).]
d. life [2222 * zoe] [Strong: from 2198; life (literally or
figuratively):--life(-time).]
e. to [3739 * hos including feminine he and neuter ho]
[Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the
relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one,
(an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]
f. as many as [3956 * pas] [Strong: including all the forms of
declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner
of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many
as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
1). as many as [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps
akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the
reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third
person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her,
it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-,
thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, -
by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those,
together, very, which.]
g. thou has given [1325 * didomi] See “he should give” above.
h. him [846 * autos] See “him” above.
1). It is the will of God that all be saved. This is consistent with
the rest of Scripture. God gave Jesus power or authority over all flesh that he
may give eternal life to all that was given him. Other verses that support
this:
a). John 6:39 And this is the
Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should
lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
b). John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.
