Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be
that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of
Christ, he is none of his.
a. NLT: But you are not controlled
by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit
of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of
Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
b. NIV: You, however, are not in
the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit
of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do
not belong to Christ.
c. YLT: And ye are not in the
flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God doth dwell in you; and if
any one hath not the Spirit of Christ -- this one is not His;
d. Amplified Bible: However, you
are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the
Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you].
But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him
[and is not a child of God].

1). Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to believers. Jesus is seated at the right hand of God
physically, but Jesus dwells in us through the person of the Holy Spirit.

and make our abode with him.
14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which

1). I can’t help but see a difference here in Romans 8:9-11 between the
Spirit of Christ and the Spirit of God [the Holy Spirit]. I can’t help but see
an implication that a person can have the Spirit of Christ dwelling in them and
not have the Spirit of God dwelling in them. I do believe that a person can be
saved and not have the baptism of the Holy Ghost and a Scriptural example is
found in Acts 8.
a). Acts 8:14-17 Now when the
apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of
God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
8:15 Who, when they were come
down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
8:16 (For as yet he was fallen
upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they
received the Holy Ghost.
