Colossians 2:13
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of
your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all
trespasses;
a. NLT: You were dead because of
your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made
you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.
b. NIV: When you were dead in your
sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with
Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
c. YLT: And you -- being dead in
the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh -- He made alive together
with him, having forgiven you all the trespasses,
d. Amplified Bible: When you were
dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (worldliness, manner
of life), God made you alive together with Christ, having [freely] forgiven us
all our sins,
e. Worrell Translation: and you,
being dead in your trespasses and the un-circumcision of your flesh, did He
make alive with Him, having freely
forgiven us all our trespasses;
1. “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision
of your flesh…”
a. And [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. you [5209 * humas] [Strong: accusative
case of 5210; you (as the objective of a verb or preposition):--ye, you (+
-ward), your (+ own).]
c. being [5607 * on, including
the feminine ousa, and the neuter on] [Strong: present participle of
1510; being:--be, come, have.]
d. dead [3498 * nekroo] [Strong: from
3498; to deaden, i.e. (figuratively) to subdue:--be dead, mortify.]
e. in [1722 * en] [Strong: a
primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and
(by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation
of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by,
etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before,
between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to,
(here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X
outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on),
through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in).
Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs
of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a
separate (and different) preposition.]
f. your sins [3900 * paraptoma]
[Strong: from 3895; a side-slip (lapse or deviation), i.e. (unintentional)
error or (wilful) transgression:--fall, fault, offence, sin, trespass.]
g. and [2532 * kai] See “and”
above.
h. the uncircumcision [203 * akrobustia]
[Strong: from 206 and probably a modified form of posthe (the penis or male
sexual organ); the prepuce; by implication, an uncircumcised (i.e. gentile,
figuratively, unregenerate) state or person:--not circumcised, uncircumcised
(with 2192), uncircumcision.]
i. of your [5216 * humon] [Strong:
genitive case of 5210; of (from or concerning) you:--ye, you, your (own,
-selves).]
j. flesh [4561 * sarx] [Strong: probably
from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the
meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul
(or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred),
or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally)
and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly
minded), flesh(-ly).]
2. “…hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven
you all trespasses;”
a. hath he quickened together [4806
* suzoopoieo] [Strong: from 4862 and 2227; to reanimate conjointly with
(figuratively):--quicken together with.]
b. with [4862 * sun] [Strong: a
primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much closer than 3326
or 3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession,
instrumentality, addition, etc.:--beside, with. In composition it has similar
applications, including completeness.]
c. him [846 * autos] [Strong: from
the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
1). When Jesus was quickened we
were quickened.
a). Ephesians 2:4-6
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
2:5 Even when we
were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are
saved;)
2:6 And hath
raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ
Jesus:
2). When Jesus was
quickened it shows that the debt for sin was paid and we were forgiven. Unless
that happened Jesus would not have been raised from the dead.
d. having forgiven [5483 * charizomai]
[Strong: middle voice from 5485; to grant as a favor, i.e. gratuitously, in
kindness, pardon or rescue:--deliver, (frankly) forgive, (freely) give, grant.]
e. you [5213 * humin] [Strong: irregular
dative case of 5210; to (with or by) you:--ye, you, your(-selves).]
f. all [3956 * pas] [Strong: including
all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the
whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every
(one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole,
whosoever.]
g. trespasses [3900 * paraptoma]
[Strong: from 3895; a side-slip (lapse or deviation), i.e. (unintentional)
error or (wilful) transgression:--fall, fault, offence, sin, trespass.]
