Psalm 4:7

Psalm 4:7

Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.

a. ASV: Thou hast put gladness in my heart, More than they have when their grain and their new wine are increased.

b. YLT: Thou hast given joy in my heart, From the time their corn and their wine Have been multiplied.

1. “Thou hast put gladness in my heart…”

a. 2. “...more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.”

d. increased [Strong: 7231 râbab, raw-bab'; a primitive root; (compare H7241); also as denominative from H7233; properly, to cast together , i.e. increase, especially in number; to multiply by the myriad:—increase, be many(-ifold), be more, multiply, ten thousands.]

1). David is referring here to a joy and gladness that is greater and deeper than the joy and gladness experienced in the natural and material world.

a). 1 Peter 1:8-10 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

2). There is a joy and gladness that comes with a right relationship with God that fills the human spirit with such joy, peace and contentment, this is what David and other men of God wrote concerning salvation.

a). Psalm 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

3). Joy from material things cannot satisfy the human spirit in the things of the spirit.

a). Isaiah 9:3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
