Isaiah 3:8, 9

 Isaiah 3:8

For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

1. “For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen…”


a. 2. “…because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD…”

1). How are Jerusalem and Judah’s tongue’s “against the LORD”? It is revealed in the next verse. In Isaiah 3:9 it says, “they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not.” Looking at the Hebrew definition of “declare” in Isaiah 3:9 tells us a lot.


a).  declare [5046 * nagad] [Strongs: to front, i.e. stand boldly out opposite; by implication (causatively), to manifest; figuratively, to announce (always by word of mouth to one present); specifically, to expose, predict, explain, praise:--bewray, X certainly, certify, declare(-ing), denounce, expound, X fully, messenger, plainly, profess, rehearse, report, shew (forth), speak, X surely, tell, utter.] [Gesenius: to be manifest, to betray, to declare, to confess, to profess openly, to proclaim, to celebrate with praise, to be shown, told.]


2). The context of what they are declaring is sin so the various definitions fit right in with the NIV use of the word “parade”. To boldly stand out (in their sin) of homosexuality, to announce (their sin) of homosexuality by word of mouth, to proclaim (their sin) of homosexuality, to celebrate (their sin) of homosexuality with praise. We must remember also that the Hebrew shows their words are directed to God in rebellion.


3). Another thing they are declaring is revealed in Jeremiah 23:14, where it says, “they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness”. They are emboldening the evildoers that they do not repent. Ezekiel lived at the same period as Jeremiah and he sheds more light on it.


a).  Ezekiel 13:22 Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life.


a). In contemporary culture one of the lies that “strengthen the hands of evil doers” and makes “the heart of the righteous sad” is the lie of sexual orientation. Homosexuality is a lust, it is not an orientation. See my note on Romans 1:26, 27.


c. [and their] doings [4611 * ma’alal] [Strong: from 5953; an act (good or bad):--doing, endeavour, invention, work.]


d. [are] against [Strong: 413 'el ale (but only used in the shortened constructive form sel {el}); a primitive particle; properly, denoting motion towards, but occasionally used of a quiescent position, i.e. near, with or among; often in general, to:--about, according to ,after, against, among, as for, at, because(-fore, -side), both...and, by, concerning, for, from, X hath, in(- to), near, (out) of, over, through, to(-ward), under, unto, upon, whether, with(-in).]


e. [the] LORD [3068 * Yehovah] [Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]


3. “...to provoke the eyes of his glory.”


a. [to] provoke [4784 * marah] [Strong: a primitive root; to be (causatively, make) bitter (or unpleasant); (figuratively) to rebel (or resist; causatively, to provoke):--bitter, change, be disobedient, disobey, grievously, provocation, provoke(-ing), (be) rebel (against, -lious).]


1). provoke: stimulate or give rise to (a reaction or emotion, typically a strong or unwelcome one) in someone. Stimulate or incite (someone) to do or feel something, especially by arousing anger in them. Deliberately make (someone) annoyed or angry.

3). They are declaring their sin to provoke God. 


b. [the] eyes [5069 * ‘ayin] [Strong: a primitive word; an eye (literally or figuratively); by analogy, a fountain (as the eye of the landscape):--affliction, outward appearance, + before, + think best, colour, conceit, + be content, countenance, + displease, eye((-brow), (-d), -sight), face, + favour, fountain, furrow (from the margin), X him, + humble, knowledge, look, (+ well), X me, open(-ly), + (not) please, presence, + regard, resemblance, sight, X thee, X them, + think, X us, well, X you(-rselves).]


c. [of his] glory [3519 * kabowd] [Strong: from 3513; properly, weight, but only figuratively in a good sense, splendor or copiousness:--glorious(-ly), glory, honour(-able).]


1). In the midst of their declaring their sin in rebellion toward and against God it is causing the failure and ruin of Jerusalem, the perishing and rotting of Judah. It is doing the same in American culture.


Isaiah 3:9


The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

2. “…and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not…”


a. 1). Remember that the context is sin so the various definitions fit right in with the NIV use of the word “parade”. To boldly stand out (in their sin) of homosexuality, to announce (their sin) of homosexuality by word of mouth, to proclaim (their sin) of homosexuality, to celebrate (their sin) of homosexuality with praise”, are all very revealing.


c. [as] Sodom [5467 * Cedom] [Strong: from an unused root meaning to scorch; burnt (i.e. volcanic or bituminous) district; Sedom, a place near the Dead Sea:-- Sodom.]


d. [they] hide [it] Strong: 3582 kachad kaw-khad' a primitive root; to secrete, by act or word; hence (intensively) to destroy:--conceal, cut down (off), desolate, hide.]


e. not [Strong: 3808 lo' lo or lowi {lo}; or loh (Deut. 3:11) {lo}; a primitive particle; not (the simple or abs. negation); by implication, no; often used with other particles (as follows):--X before, + or else, ere, + except, ig(-norant), much, less, nay, neither, never, no((-ne), -r, (-thing)), (X as though...,(can-), for) not (out of), of nought, otherwise, out of, + surely, + as truly as, + of a truth, + verily, for want, + whether, without.]


1). Anyone who has witnessed a Gay Pride Parade has seen these definitions literally come alive before their eyes. In these parades the homosexual is celebrating the pride he or she has in their homosexuality. In their ignorance, the homosexual movement’s use of the word “pride” indicts them as a prophetic link to ancient Sodom in Ezekiel 16:49. “This was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride,…”  Their behavior at these parades, according to Isaiah 3:9, also is a prophetic link to ancient Sodom, “…they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not…” 


2). The first homosexual “pride” parade was held in 1970 in New York City celebrating the 1969 Stonewall riot, which occurred the previously year, when homosexuals rioted for three days in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a homosexual hangout. Twenty nine years later in 1999, Interpride: The International Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgendered Pride Coordinators listed 108 homosexual celebrations in 108 U.S. cities and 15 others in Canada. A group across the Atlantic, The European Pride Organizers Association listed 53 homosexual celebrations in 19 different European countries, for a total of 176 homosexual “pride” celebrations worldwide. In 2004, I found at least 310 homosexual “pride” celebrations. This increase is obviously a fulfillment of the prophetic word spoken by Jesus in Luke 17:28, 30: “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot…even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.” Just as Sodom paraded/declared/celebrated their sin of homosexuality, so did Jerusalem and Judah, and so is America and the world with America taking the lead.


3. “…Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.”
