tenth of this month they shall take for themselves—each man—a lamb or kid for
each father’s house, a lamb or kid for the household.
1. “Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying…”
a. Speak ye [1696 * dabar]
[Strong: a primitive root; perhaps properly, to arrange; but used figuratively
(of words), to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue:--answer,
appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise,
pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell,
think, use (entreaties), utter, X well, X work.]
b. unto all the congregation [5712
* `edah] [Strong: feminine of 5707 in the original sense of fixture;
a stated assemblage (specifically, a concourse, or generally, a family or
crowd):--assembly, company, congregation, multitude, people, swarm.]
c. of Israel [3478 * Yisra'el]
[Strong: from 8280 and 410; he will rule as God; Jisrael, a
symbolical name of Jacob; also (typically) of his posterity: --Israel.]
d. saying [559 * 'amar] [Strong: a
primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch,
bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give)
command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X
expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report,
require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that
is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]
2. “…In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them
every man a lamb…”
a. In the tenth [6218 * `asowr; or
masor] [Strong: from 6235; ten; by abbrev. ten strings, and so a
decachord:--(instrument of) ten (strings, -th).]
b. day of this month [2320 * chodesh]
[Strong: from 2318; the new moon; by implication, a month:--month(-ly),
new moon.]
1). This is the first month of the
year for Israel and comprised 30 days within our months of March and April.
c. they shall take [3947 * laqach]
[Strong: a primitive root; to take (in the widest variety of
applications):--accept, bring, buy, carry away, drawn, fetch, get, infold, X
many, mingle, place, receive(-ing), reserve, seize, send for, take (away, -ing,
up), use, win.]
d. to them every man [376 * 'iysh]
[Strong: contracted for 582 (or perhaps rather from an unused root
meaning to be extant); a man as an individual or a male person; often used as
an adjunct to a more definite term (and in such cases frequently not expressed
in translation):--also, another, any (man), a certain, + champion, consent,
each, every (one), fellow, (foot-, husband-)man, (good-, great, mighty) man,
he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, man(-kind), + none, one, people,
person, + steward, what (man) soever, whoso(-ever), worthy.]
e. a lamb [7716 * she; or sey] [Strong:
probably from 7582 through the idea of pushing out to graze; a member
of a flock, i.e. a sheep or goat:--(lesser, small) cattle, ewe, goat, lamb,
sheep.]
1). Albert Barnes Commentary: The
Hebrew word is general, meaning either a sheep or a goat - male or female - and
of any age; the age and sex are therefore especially defined in the following
verse.
2). This same day when the Passover
lamb is to be chosen is the same day of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Notice that the people declared Jesus to be their King. In the passage in
Matthew they referred to Jesus as the Son of David, a Messianic name (Matthew
21:9). In the passage of John’s Gospel they called Jesus the “King of Israel”,
John 12:13).
a). Luke 19:28-40 And when he had
thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
19:29 And it came to pass, when he
was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of
Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
19:30 Saying, Go ye into the
village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt
tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
19:31 And if any man ask you, Why
do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
19:32 And they that were sent went
their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
19:33 And as they were loosing the
colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
19:34 And they said, The Lord hath
need of him.
19:35 And they brought him to
Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
19:36 And as he went, they spread
their clothes in the way.
19:37 And when he was come nigh,
even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples
began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that
they had seen;
19:38 Saying, Blessed be the King
that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
19:39 And some of the Pharisees
from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
10:40 And he answered and said
unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would
immediately cry out.
b). Matthew 21:1-11
c). Mark 11:1-10
d). John 12:12-16
3. “…according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an
house:”
a. according to the house [1004 * bayith]
[Strong: probably from 1129 abbreviated; a house (in the greatest
variation of applications, especially family, etc.):--court, daughter, door, +
dungeon, family, + forth of, X great as would contain, hangings, home(born),
(winter)house(-hold), inside(-ward), palace, place, + prison, + steward, +
tablet, temple, web, + within(-out).]
b. of their fathers [1 * 'ab]
