Exodus 17:1


Exodus 17:1

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

a. ASV: And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to the commandment of Jehovah, and encamped in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

b. YLT: And all the company of the sons of Israel journey from the wilderness of Sin, on their journeyings, by the command of Jehovah, and encamp in Rephidim, and there is no water for the people to drink;

1. “And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin…”

a. e. journeyed [Strong: 5265 nâçaʻ, naw-sah'; a primitive root; properly, to pull up, especially the tent-pins, i.e. start on a journey:—cause to blow, bring, get, (make to) go (away, forth, forward, onward, out), (take) journey, march, remove, set aside (forward), × still, be on his (go their) way.]

f. [from the] wilderness [Strong: 4057 midbâr, mid-bawr'; from H1696 in the sense of driving; a pasture (i.e. open field, whither cattle are driven); by implication, a desert; also speech (including its organs):—desert, south, speech, wilderness.]

g. [of] Sin [Strong: 5512 Çîyn, seen; of uncertain derivation; Sin the name of an Egyptian town and (probably) desert adjoining:—Sin.]

2. “...after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD…”

a. [after their] journeys [Strong: 4550 maççaʻ, mas-sah'; from H5265; a departure (from striking the tents), i.e. march (not necessarily a single day's travel); by implication, a station (or point of departure):—journey(-ing).]

3. “...and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.”

a. [and] pitched [Strong: 2583 chânâh, khaw-naw'; a primitive root (compare H2603); properly, to incline; by implication, to decline (of the slanting rays of evening); specifically, to pitch a tent; generally to encamp (for abode or siege):—abide (in tents), camp, dwell, encamp, grow to an end, lie, pitch (tent), rest in tent.]

b. [in] Rephidim [Strong: 7508 Rᵉphîydîym, ref-ee-deem'; plural of the masculine of the same as H7507; ballusters; Rephidim, a place in the Desert:—Rephidim.]

[and there was] no [Strong: 369  'ayin ah'-yin as if from a primitive root meaning to be nothing or not exist; a non-entity; generally used as a negative particle:--else, except, fail, (father-)less, be gone, in(-curable), neither, never, no (where), none, nor, (any, thing), not, nothing, to nought, past, un(-searchable), well-nigh, without.]

d. water [Strong: 4325 mayim, mah'-yim; dual of a primitive noun (but used in a singular sense); water; figuratively, juice; by euphemism, urine, semen:— piss, wasting, water(-ing, (-course, -flood, -spring)).]

e. [for the] people [Strong: 5971 ʻam, am; from H6004; a people (as a congregated unit); specifically, a tribe (as those of Israel); hence (collectively) troops or attendants; figuratively, a flock:—folk, men, nation, people.]

f. [to] drink [Strong: 8354  shâthâh, shaw-thaw'; a primitive root; to imbibe (literally or figuratively):—×assuredly, banquet, × certainly, drink(-er, -ing), drunk (× -ard), surely. (Intensive proposition of H8248.)]

1). As to the location of Rephidim it is unclear. It has to be between the coast of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia and Mt. Sinai. What is not mentioned in Exodus but is mentioned in Numbers is that Israel encamped twice between the wilderness of Sin and Rephidim.

a). Numbers 33:11-14 And they removed from the Red sea, and encamped in the wilderness of Sin.
33:12 And they took their journey out of the wilderness of Sin, and encamped in Dophkah.
33:13 And they departed from Dophkah, and encamped in Alush.
33:14 And they removed from Alush, and encamped at Rephidim, where was no water for the people to drink.
