Genesis 41:46

And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

1). The Bible says that Joseph was thirty years old when he was promoted by Pharaoh. This helps us develop a rough timeline all the way back beyond  Isaac, to the flood. Using the following Biblical information we can determine that Jacob was 91 at the time of Joseph’s birth..

a). Joseph was 30 years old when he was exalted to Prime Minister of Egypt.

b). Genesis 41:46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

2). Add to that the seven years of plenty and the two years of famine, it makes Joseph 39 when he revealed himself to his brethren.

a). Genesis 41:47 And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls.

b). Genesis 45:6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.

3). Jacob was 130 years old when he was brought down to Egypt to live and Joseph was 39.

a). Genesis 47:9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

b). If Jacob was 130 and Joseph was 39, then that means Jacob was 91 when Joseph was born in Haran.

c). Scholars also estimate that Jacob was 77 when he left to go to Haran.

d). So Joseph was about 30+7+(7-5) = 39 years old when Jacob came to Egypt at 130. So Jacob was about 91 years old when Joseph was born. As we read in Gen 37:3, Joseph was a "son of his old age". While Benjamin was younger than Joseph, he was just a little child at the time of Gen 37:3, when Jacob regarded Joseph as a son of his old age. This will be shown later in this article. Now, after Joseph was born, Jacob asked Laban that he be allowed to leave (Gen 30:25). He did not leave at that time, but he spent a total of 20 years with Laban (Gen 31:38,41): 14 years for his wives and 6 for his sheep and cattle (Gen 31:41). 1). Henry M. Morris: “he went throughout all the land of Egypt”, probably indicating a much more detailed unit by unit survey of the agriculture and other productive occupations of the Egyptians. He was then able to organize, with his assistants, a comprehensive program of conservation during the good years ahead.
