1 Corinthians 10:10

1 Corinthians 10:10

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

a. NLT: And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.

b. NIV: And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.

c. YLT: neither murmur ye, as also some of them did murmur, and did perish by the destroyer.

d. Amplified Bible:  Nor discontentedly complain as some of them did—and were [a]put out of the way entirely by the destroyer (death).

e. Worrell Translation: Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.

1. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured

a. neither [3366 * mede] [Strong: from 3361 and 1161; but not, not even; in a continued negation, nor:--neither, nor (yet), (no) not (once, so much as).]

b. murmur ye [1111 * gogguzo] [Strong: of uncertain derivation; to grumble:--murmur.]

c. as [2531 * kathos; kata- according to; hos-as] [Strong: just (or inasmuch) as, that:--according to, (according, even) as, how, when.]

d. some [5100 * tis] [Strong: an enclitic indefinite pronoun; some or any person or object:--a (kind of), any (man, thing, thing at all), certain (thing), divers, he (every) man, one (X thing), ought, + partly, some (man, -body, - thing, -what), (+ that no-)thing, what(-soever), X wherewith, whom(-soever), whose(-soever).]

e. of them [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

f. also [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

g. murmured [1111 * gogguzo] See “murmur” above.

1). From what I can see this event refers to the murmuring Israel did because of the evil report of the 10 spies that came back from spying out the Promised Land. The other two spies. Caleb and Joshua did not bring an evil report (Numbers 13:1:33; Numbers 14:1-38.

2. “…and were destroyed of the destroyer.”

a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. were destroyed [622 * apollumi] [Strong: from 575 and the base of 3639; to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively:--destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.]

c. of [5259 * hupo] [Strong: a primary preposition; under, i.e. (with the genitive case) of place (beneath), or with verbs (the agency or means, through); (with the accusative case) of place (whither (underneath) or where (below) or time (when (at)):--among, by, from, in, of, under, with. In the comparative, it retains the same general applications, especially of inferior position or condition, and specially, covertly or moderately.]

d. the destroyer [3644 * olothreutes] [Strong: from 3645; a ruiner, i.e. (specially), a venomous serpent:--destroyer.]

1). The Bible speaks of angels of death, destroying angels or maybe more than one, who destroy and kill multitudes of people.

a). Proverbs 16:14 The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.

(1) messengers [4397 * mal’ak] [Strong: from an unused root meaning to despatch as a deputy; a messenger; specifically, of God, i.e. an angel (also a prophet, priest or teacher):--ambassador, angel, king, messenger.]

(2) Proverbs 16:14 [Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings] The king’s wrath is [like] angels of death, but a wise man will appease it.

2). These angels are capable of destroying, killing multitudes of people. Below are examples.

a). Exodus 12:12, 13 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.
12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

(1) It probably not the Lord personally but one of His angels, the destroying angel.

b). 2 Samuel 24:15-17 So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.
24:16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, theLord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.
24:17 And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

c). 2 Kings 19:35 And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
