1 Corinthians 10:6

Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

a. NLT: These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did,

b. NIV: Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

c. YLT: and those things became types of us, for our not passionately desiring evil things, as also these did desire.

d. Amplified Bible: Now these things are examples (warnings and admonitions) for us not to desire or crave or covet or lust after evil and carnal things as they did.

e. Worrell Translation: Now these things became types for us, that we might not covet evil things, as they also coveted.

1. “Now these things were our examples…”

a. Now [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. these things [5023 * tauta] [Strong: nominative or accusative case neuter plural of 3778; these things:--+ afterward, follow, + hereafter, X him, the same, so, such, that, then, these, they, this, those, thus.]

d. our [2257 * hemon] [Strong: genitive case plural of 1473; of (or from) us:--our (company), us, we.]

e. examples [5179 * tupos] [Strong: from 5180; a die (as struck), i.e. (by implication) a stamp or scar; by analogy, a shape, i.e. a statue, (figuratively) style or resemblance; specially, a sampler ("type"), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning):--en-(ex-)ample, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.]

           1). This same Greek word is used in verse 11 of the same chapter. These are bad examples.                  Paul in other places gave good examples also.

2. “…to the intent we should not lust after evil things…”

d. not [3361 * me] [Strong: a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

e. lust after evil [2556 * kakos] [Strong: apparently a primary word; worthless (intrinsically, such; whereas 4190 properly refers to effects), i.e. (subjectively) depraved, or (objectively) injurious:--bad, evil, harm, ill, noisome, wicked.]

f. things [1938 * epithumetes] [Strong: from 1937; a craver:--+ lust after.]

3. “…as they also lusted.”

a. as [2531 * kathos] [Strong: from 2596 and 5613; just (or inasmuch) as, that:--according to, (according, even) as, how, when.]

b. they also [2548 * kakeinos] [Strong: from 2532 and 1565; likewise that (or those):--and him (other, them), even he, him also, them (also), (and) they.]

c. lusted [1937 * eipthumeo] [Strong: from 1909 and 2372; to set the heart upon, i.e. long for (rightfully or otherwise):--covet, desire, would fain, lust (after).]
