1 Corinthians 10:9
Neither
let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of
serpents.
a. NLT: Nor should we put Christ to the
test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites.
1). Some manuscripts read “the Lord”.
b. NIV: We should not test Christ, as
some of them did—and were killed by snakes.
1). Some manuscripts “test the Lord”.
c. YLT: neither may we tempt the Christ, as
also certain of them did tempt, and by the serpents did perish;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: We should not
tempt the Lord [try His patience, become a trial to Him, critically appraise
Him, and exploit His goodness] as some of them did—and were killed by poisonous
serpents;
e. Worrell Translation: Nor let us tempt the
Lord, as some of them tempted Him, and perished by the serpents.
1.
“Neither let us tempt Christ…”
a. neither [3366 * mede] [Strong: from 3361
and 1161; but not, not even; in a continued negation, nor:--neither, nor (yet),
(no) not (once, so much as)]
b. let us tempt [1598 * ekpeirazo] [Strong: from
1537 and 3985; to test thoroughly:--tempt.]
c. Christ [5547 * Christos] [Strong: from
5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]
1). Adam Clarke Commentary: Instead of Χριστον, Christ, several MSS.
and a few versions have Κυριον, the Lord, and some few Θεον, God. But though
some respectable MSS. have the Lord instead of Christ, yet this latter has the
greatest proportion of authority on its side. And this affords no mean proof
that the person who is called יהוה Yehovah in the Old Testament, is called
Christ in the New. By tempting Christ is meant disbelieving the providence and
goodness of God; and presuming to prescribe to him how he should send them the
necessary supplies, and of what kind they should be, etc.
2. “…as
some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.”
a. as [2531 * kathos] [Strong: from 2596 and
5613; just (or inasmuch) as, that:--according to, (according, even) as, how,

b. some [5100 * tis] [Strong: an enclitic
indefinite pronoun; some or any person or object:--a (kind of), any (man,
thing, thing at all), certain (thing), divers, he (every) man, one (X thing),
ought, + partly, some (man, -body, - thing, -what), (+ that no-)thing,
what(-soever), X wherewith, whom(-soever), whose(-soever).]
c. of them [846 * autos] [Strong: from
the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
d. also [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a
primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
e. tempted [3985 * peirazo] [Strong: from
3984; to test (objectively), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize, entice,
discipline:--assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt(-er), try.]
f. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a
primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
g. were destroyed [622 * apollumi] [Strong: from
575 and the base of 3639; to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose),
literally or figuratively:--destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.]
h. of [5259 * hupo] [Strong: a primary
preposition; under, i.e. (with the genitive case) of place (beneath), or with
verbs (the agency or means, through); (with the accusative case) of place
(whither (underneath) or where (below) or time (when (at)):--among, by, from,
in, of, under, with. In the comparative, it retains the same general
applications, especially of inferior position or condition, and specially,
covertly or moderately.]
i. serpents [3798 * ophis] [Strong: from 3700
(through the idea of sharpness of vision); a snake, figuratively, (as a type of
sly cunning) an artful malicious person, especially Satan:--serpent.]
1). This is the incident reported in Numbers.
a). Numbers 21:4-9 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of
the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much
discouraged because of the way.
21:5 And the people spake against God, and
against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the
wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul
loatheth this light bread.
21:6 And the Lord sent fiery
serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel
died.
21:7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and
said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against
thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And
Moses prayed for the people.
21:8 And the Lord said unto Moses,
Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass,
that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and
put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man,
when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
2). It confirms that the Lord of the Old Testament is the
pre-incarnate Christ Jesus.
