Genesis 13:13

But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.

a. NLT: But the people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the LORD.

b. NIV: Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.

c. YLT: and the men of Sodom are evil, and sinners before Jehovah exceedingly.

d. Amplified Bible: But the men of Sodom were wicked and exceedingly great sinners against the Lord.

e. Septuagint: But the men of Sodom were evil, and exceedingly sinful before God.

1. “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.”

a. the men [582 * ‘enowsh] [Strong: rom 605; properly, a mortal (and thus differing from the more dignified 120); hence, a man in general (singly or collectively):--another, X (blood-)thirsty, certain, chap(-man); divers, fellow, X in the flower of their age, husband, (certain, mortal) man, people, person, servant, some ( X of them), + stranger, those, + their trade. It is often unexpressed in the English versions, especially when used in apposition with another word.]

b. of Sodom [5467 * Cdom] [Strong: from an unused root meaning to scorch; burnt (i.e. volcanic or bituminous) district; Sedom, a place near the Dead Sea:-- Sodom.]

c. were wicked [7451 * ra’] [Strong: from 7489; bad or (as noun) evil (natural or moral):-- adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, + displease(-ure), distress, evil((- favouredness), man, thing), + exceedingly, X great, grief(-vous), harm, heavy, hurt(-ful), ill (favoured), + mark, mischief(-vous), misery, naught(-ty), noisome, + not please, sad(-ly), sore, sorrow, trouble, vex, wicked(-ly, -ness, one), worse(-st), wretchedness, wrong. (Incl. feminine raaah; as adjective or noun.).]

d. and sinners [2400 * chatta’] [Strong: intensively from 2398; a criminal, or one accounted guilty:--offender, sinful, sinner.]

e. the LORD [3068 * Yhovah] [Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

f. exceedingly [3966 * m’od] [Strong: from the same as 181; properly, vehemence, i.e. (with or without preposition) vehemently; by implication, wholly, speedily, etc. (often with other words as an intensive or superlative; especially when repeated):--diligently, especially, exceeding(-ly), far, fast, good, great(-ly), X louder and louder, might(-ily, -y), (so) much, quickly, (so) sore, utterly, very (+ much, sore), well.]

1). The area around Sodom had a reputation at this time, one of gross sinfulness.
