1 Corinthians 10:7

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

a. NLT: or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”

b. NIV: Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”

c. YLT: Neither become ye idolaters, as certain of them, as it hath been written, 'The people sat down to eat and to drink, and stood up to play;

d. Amplified Bible: Do not be worshipers of false gods as some of them were, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink [the sacrifices offered to the golden calf at Horeb] and rose to sport (to dance and give way to jesting and hilarity).

1. “Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; …”

a. neither [3366 * mede] [Strong: from 3361 and 1161; but not, not even; in a continued negation, nor:--neither, nor (yet), (no) not (once, so much as).]

1). This is a quote from Exodus 32 and Israel’s worship of the golden calf.

c. the people [2992 * laos] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a people (in general; thus differing from 1218, which denotes one's own populace):--people.]

d. sat down [2523 * kathizo] [Strong: another (active) form for 2516; to seat down, i.e. set (figuratively, appoint); intransitively, to sit (down); figuratively, to settle (hover, dwell):--continue, set, sit (down), tarry.]

e. to eat [5315 * phago] [Strong: a primary verb (used as an alternate of 2068 in certain tenses); to eat (literally or figuratively):--eat, meat.]

j. to play [3815 * paizo] [Strong: from 3816; to sport (as a boy):--play.]

1). Exodus 32:6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

2). play [6711 * tsachaq] [Strong: a primitive root; to laugh outright (in merriment or scorn); by implication, to sport:--laugh, mock, play, make sport.]

3). Commentary Exodus 32:6 Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: The term “tsachaq” implies the three cardinal sins of idolatry, licentiousness and murder. In addition to their worship of the Golden Calf, they committed immoral acts and they had murdered Hur, who attempted to restrain them (Rashi).

a). Concerning the Jewish tradition about Hur’s murder during the rebellion in his attempt to restrain them from their sin, it is clear that Hur had a prominent place beside Aaron in some form of leadership (Exodus 17:12). In fact, when Moses went up the mountain, he left Aaron and Hur in charge (Exodus 24:14). Yet, this is the last time Hur is mentioned.

4). David H. Stern, Jewish new Testament Commentary: This refers to the making of the golden calf. “Indulge in revelry” means sexual play or idolatry…”
