Genesis 12:5

Genesis 12:5

And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

a. NLT: He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan,

b. NIV: He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

c. YLT: And Abram taketh Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they have gained, and the persons that they have obtained in Charan; and they go out to go towards the land of Canaan; and they come in to the land of Canaan.

1. “And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son…”

a. Abram [87 * ‘Abram] [Strong: contracted from 48; high father; Abram, the original name of Abraham:--Abram.]

b. took [3947 * laqach] [Strong: a primitive root; to take (in the widest variety of applications):--accept, bring, buy, carry away, drawn, fetch, get, infold, X many, mingle, place, receive(-ing), reserve, seize, send for, take (away, -ing, up), use, win.]

c. Sarai [8297 * Saray] [Strong: from 8269; dominative; Sarai, the wife of Abraham:--Sarai.]

d. his wife [802 * ‘ishshah] [Strong: feminine of 376 or 582; irregular plural, nashiym {naw-sheem'}; a woman (used in the same wide sense as 582):--(adulter)ess, each, every, female, X many, + none, one, + together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English.

e. Lot [3876 * Lowt] [Strong: the same as 3875; Lot, Abraham's nephew:--Lot.]

f. brother’s [251 * ‘ach] [Strong: a primitive word; a brother (used in the widest sense of literal relationship and metaphorical affinity or resemblance (like 1)):--another, brother(-ly); kindred, like, other. Compare also the proper names beginning with "Ah-" or "Ahi-".]

1). The original command was for Abram to leave his family behind.

a). Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2). The reason is because they were Idolaters.

a). Joshua 24:2 And Joshua said unto all the people,  Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.

2. “…and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran…”

a. and all their substance [7399 * rkuwsh] [Strong: from passive participle of 7408; property (as gathered):--good, riches, substance.]

b. that they had gathered [7408 * rakash] [Strong: a primitive root; to lay up, i.e. collect:--gather, get.]

c. and the souls [5315 * nephesh] [Strong: from 5314; properly, a breathing creature, i.e. animal of (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal, accommodated or figurative sense (bodily or mental):--any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, X dead(-ly), desire, X (dis-)contented, X fish, ghost, + greedy, he, heart(-y), (hath, X jeopardy of) life (X in jeopardy), lust, man, me, mind, mortally, one, own, person, pleasure, (her-, him-, my-, thy-)self, them (your)-selves, + slay, soul, + tablet, they, thing, (X she) will, X would have it.]

e. in Haran [2771 * Charan] [Strong: from 2787; parched; Charan, the name of a man and also of a place:--Haran.]

1). It is unknown how many servants the family had when they left Ur, but it is probable they had servants there. Here it tells that the family had also gotted servants in Haran, along with more substance. Abram continued to get wealthier as time went on.

3. “…and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.”
