1). The
purpose of the requirement of this ceremony goes back to the time when Israel
was delivered out of Egypt at the first Passover.
a). Exodus
13:1, 2 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
13:2 Sanctify
unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of
Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.
b). Exodus
13:11-15 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the
Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee,
13:12 That
thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every
firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the
LORD'S.
13:13 And
every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not
redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy
children shalt thou redeem.
13:14 And
it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this?
that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from
Egypt, from the house of bondage:
13:15 And
it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD slew all
the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the
firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the
matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem.
c. Exodus
34:19, 20 All that
openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or
sheep, that is male.
34:20 But
the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him
not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt
redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.
d). Numbers
3:12, 13 And I,
behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of
all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel:
therefore the Levites shall be mine;
3:13 Because
all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in
the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and
beast: mine shall they be: I am the Lord.
e). Numbers
18:15 Every thing that openeth the matrix in all flesh, which they bring unto
the Lord, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine: nevertheless the
firstborn of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts
shalt thou redeem.
2). The
word redeem means “to purchase”, so included in the ceremony of presentation
was the “redeeming” of the children. The amount of money is specified in the
instructions given to Moses in Numbers.
a).
Numbers 18:15, 16 Every thing that openeth the matrix in all flesh, which they
bring unto the LORD, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine:
nevertheless the firstborn of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling
of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem.
18:16 And
those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to
thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the
sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.
