saw his star as it rose, fnand we have come to worship him.”
b. NIV: and asked, “Where is the one
who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come

c. Young’s Literal Translation: saying,
'Where is he who was born king of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east,
and we came to bow to him.'
d. Amplified Bible: Where is He Who
has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east at
its rising and have come to worship Him.
e. Worrell Translation: saying, “Where
is He That is born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east, and we
came to do Him homage.”
1. “Saying, Where is he that is
born King of the Jews?...”
a. saying [3004 * lego] [Strong: a
primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate
(in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas 2036 and 5346
generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while 4483
is properly to break silence merely, and 2980 means an extended or random
harangue)); by implication, to mean:--ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give
out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.
b. where [4226 * pou] [Strong: genitive
case of an interrogative pronoun pos (what) otherwise obsolete (perhaps the
same as 4225 used with the rising slide of inquiry); as adverb of place; at (by
implication, to) what locality:--where, whither.]
c. is [2076 * esti] [Strong: third
person singular present indicative of 1510; he (she or it) is; also (with
neuter plural) they are:--are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth,
X dure for a while, + follow, X have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, X must
needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.]
d. born [5088 * tikto] [Strong: a
strengthened form of a primary teko tek'-o (which is used only as alternate in
certain tenses); to produce (from seed, as a mother, a plant, the earth, etc.),
literally or figuratively:--bear, be born, bring forth, be delivered, be in
travail.]
e. king [935 * basileus] [Strong: probably
from 939 (through the notion of a foundation of power); a sovereign
(abstractly, relatively, or figuratively):--king.]
f. Jews [2453 * loudaios] [Strong: from
2448 (in the sense of 2455 as a country); Judaean, i.e. belonging to
Jehudah:--Jew(-ess), of Judaea.]
2. “…for we have seen his star in
the east, and are come to worship him.”
a. for [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a
reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other
particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing,
then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]
b. seen [1492 * eido] [Strong: a
primary verb; used only in certain past tenses, the others being borrowed from
the equivalent 3700 and 3708; properly, to see (literally or figuratively); by
implication, (in the perfect tense only) to know:--be aware, behold, X can (+
not tell), consider, (have) know(-ledge), look (on), perceive, see, be sure,
tell, understand, wish, wot.]
c. his [846 * autos] [Strong: from the
particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
d. star [792 * aster] [Strong: probably
from the base of 4766; a star (as strown over the sky), literally or
figuratively:--star.]
e. in [1722 * en] [Strong: a primary
preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by
implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of
rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by,
etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before,
between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to,
(here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly,
one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on),
through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in).
Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs
of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a
separate (and different) preposition.]
f. east [395 * Anatole] [Strong: from
393; a rising of light, i.e. dawn (figuratively); by implication, the east
(also in plural):--dayspring, east, rising.]
1). It is not clear what is meant by “his
star”, but there is prophetic Scripture that links the Messiah with a star.
Both of these passages would have been known to Daniel.
a). Numbers 24:17-19 I shall see him,
but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of
Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of
Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
24:18 And Edom shall be a possession,
Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
24:19 Out of Jacob shall come he that
shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
b). Isaiah 60:1-3 Arise, shine; for
thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
60:2 For, behold, the darkness shall
cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall
arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
60:3 And the Gentiles shall come to
thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
2). In light of the information from
Chuck Missler and the Institute for Creation Research (See notes on Matthew
2:1), it is probable that the passages concerning the star and the Messiah
would have been known to the Magi and perhaps to the Persians who converted to
Judaism. We also know that Daniel knew the approximate time of the appearance of
the Messiah in Israel. What we don’t know is what did this particular star or
conjunction of planets or stars, translate to the Magi that it was “his star”.
3. “…and are come to worship him.”
a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. are come [2064 * erchomai] [Strong:
middle voice of a primary verb (used only in the present and imperfect tenses,
the others being supplied by a kindred (middle voice) eleuthomai
el-yoo'-thom-ahee, or (active) eltho el'-tho, which do not otherwise occur) to
come or go (in a great variety of applications, literally and
figuratively):--accompany, appear, bring, come, enter, fall out, go, grow, X
light, X next, pass, resort, be set.]
c. worship [4352 * proskuneo] [Strong:
from 4314 and a probable derivative of 2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog
licking his master's hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or
figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore):--worship.]
d. him [846 * autos] [Strong: from the
particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
