Luke 2:40

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

a. NLT: There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

b. NIV: And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

c. Amplified Bible: And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace (favor and spiritual blessing) of God was upon Him.

d. Young’s Literal Translation: and the child grew and was strengthened in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

e. Worrell Translation: And the child was growing, and was becoming strong, being filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

1. “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom…”

b. child [3813 * paidion] [Strong: neuter diminutive of 3816; a childling (of either sex), i.e. (properly), an infant, or (by extension) a half-grown boy or girl; figuratively, an immature Christian:--(little, young) child, damsel.]

c. grew [837 * auzano] [Strong: a prolonged form of a primary verb; to grow ("wax"), i.e. enlarge (literal or figurative, active or passive):--grow (up), (give the) increase.]

d. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. waxed strong [2901 * krataioo] [Strong: from 2900; to empower, i.e. (passively) increase in vigor:--be strengthened, be (wax) strong.]

f. spirit [4151 * pneuma] [Strong: from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.]

g. filled [4137 * pleroo] [Strong: from 4134; to make replete, i.e. (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish (or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction), etc.:--accomplish, X after, (be) complete, end, expire, fill (up), fulfil, (be, make) full (come), fully preach, perfect, supply.

h. wisdom [4678 * sophia] [Strong: from 4680; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual):--wisdom.]

1). As Jesus grew physically, he also grew in knowledge and wisdom. Scripture teaches that when the Second Person of the Godhead became man, he laid aside his Godlike abilities, such as, Omnipotence: Jesus was not all powerful while he was on earth as a man. Omnipresence: Jesus could only be at one place at a time while he was on earth as a man. Omniscience: Clearly Scripture reveals he grew in knowledge and wisdom. See notes at Philippians 2:7.

a. Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

e. upon [1909 * epi] [Strong: a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with.
