Luke 2:48

Luke 2:48

And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

a. NLT: His parents didn’t know what to think. “Son,” his mother said to him, “why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.”

b. NIV: When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

c. Young’s Literal Translation: And, having seen him, they were amazed, and his mother said unto him, 'Child, why didst thou thus to us? lo, thy father and I, sorrowing, were seeking thee.'

d. Amplified Bible: And when they [Joseph and Mary] saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, Child, why have You treated us like this? Here Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You [distressed and tormented].

e. Worrell Translation: And seeing Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Child, why didst Thou treat us thus? Behold, Thy father and I were seeking Thee, sorrowing”!

a. And [2532 * kai] [Strong:  apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. when they saw [1492 eido] [Strong: a primary verb; used only in certain past tenses, the others being borrowed from the equivalent 3700 and 3708; properly, to see (literally or figuratively); by implication, (in the perfect tense only) to know:--be aware, behold, X can (+ not tell), consider, (have) know(-ledge), look (on), perceive, see, be sure, tell, understand, wish, wot.]

c. him [846 * autos] [Strong: [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

d. amazed [1605 * ekplesso; ek-intensive; plesso-to strike] [Zodhiates: to strike out, force out by a blow, but found only in the sense of knocking one out of his senses or self-possession.] [Strong: from 1537 and 4141; to strike with astonishment:--amaze, astonish.]

1). Speaking form a natural point of view they were probably beside themselves about the situation. The way the Greek for “amazed” reads, they completely lost their emotional self control. As we shall see though, Jesus was not really sympathetic to their emotional parental concern.

2. “…and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?”

3. “…behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.”

1). David Stern, Jewish New Testament Commentary: Miryam’s question is misplaced. Upset as she and Yosef may have been while searching several days for their child, they should, according to Yeshua’s response in the following verse, have known where to look, especially in light of what had already been revealed to them about their son (Matthew 1, 2; Luke 1, 2). The narrative does not suggest that Yeshua, by “getting himself lost,” had misbehaved, but that Miryam, like many worried mothers, had overreacted.
