Ephesians 3:17

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

a. NLT: Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.

b. NIV: So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,

1. “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith..”

2.  “…that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,”

a. that [ye] [Strong: 2443 hina hin'-ah probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]

b. [being] rooted [Strong: 4492 rhizoo hrid-zo'-o from 4491; to root (figuratively, become stable):--root.]

1). This word is only used twice in the New Testament, here in Ephesians and also in Colossians.

a). Colossians 2:7  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

2). A derivative of this word is used in the parable of the Sower to explain why some do not bring forth fruit.

a). Matthew 13:5, 6  Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:

13:6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

b). Mark 4:16, 17 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

4:17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.

c). Luke 8:13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

c. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

d. grounded [Strong: 2311 themelioo them-el-ee-o'-o from 2310; to lay a basis for, i.e. (literally) erect, or (figuratively) consolidate:--(lay the) found(- ation), ground, settle.]
