Ephesians 6:20

For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

a. YLT: For which I am an ambassador in a chain, that in it I may speak freely -- as it behoveth me to speak.

b. ASV: For which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

c. Darby Translation: For which I am an ambassador bound with a chain, that I may be bold in it as I ought to speak.

1. “For which I am an ambassador in bonds…”

a. For [Strong: 5228 hypér, hoop-er'; a primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the genitive case) of place, above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of, instead, regarding; with the accusative case superior to, more than:—(+ exceeding, abundantly) above, in (on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest, concerning, exceeding (above, -ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over, on the part of, for sake of, in stead, than, to(-ward), very.]

b. which [Strong: 3739 hós, hos; probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article G3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:—one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

c. [I am an] ambassador [Strong: 4243 presbeúō, pres-byoo'-o; from the base of G4245; to be a senior, i.e. (by implication) act as a representative (figuratively, preacher):—be an ambassador.] [Thayer: to be older, prior by birth or in age, to be an ambassador, act as an ambassador.] [Bullinger: to be the elder or eldest; to rank before, take precedence of others, to be an ambassador or go as one, to treat or negotiate as one.] [Webster: The highest ranking diplomatic official of a government or state representing it in another country. d. in [Strong: 1722 en, en; a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between G1519 and G1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:—about, after, against, + almost, × altogether, among, × as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), × mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, × outwardly, one, × quickly, × shortly, (speedi-)ly, × that, × there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). e. bonds [Strong: 254 hálysis, hal'-oo-sis; of uncertain derivation; a fetter or manacle:—bonds, chain.]

a). 2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

2. “…that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

d. I may speak boldly [Strong: 3955 parrhēsiázomai, par-hray-see-ad'-zom-ahee; middle voice from G3954; to be frank in utterance, or confident in spirit and demeanor:—be (wax) bold, (preach, speak) boldly.]

e. as [Strong: 5613 hōs, hoce; probably adverb of comparative from G3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):—about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, × with all speed.]

f. I [Strong: 3165 hōs, hoce; probably adverb of comparative from G3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):—about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, × with all speed.]

g. ought [Strong: 1163 deî, die; 3rd person singular active present of G1210; also deon deh-on'; neuter active participle of the same; both used impersonally; it is (was, etc.) necessary (as binding):—behoved, be meet, must (needs), (be) need(-ful), ought, should.]

h. to speak [Strong: 2980 laléō, lal-eh'-o; a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to talk, i.e. utter words:—preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]
