Ephesians 5:26

That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

a. YLT: That he might sanctify it, having cleansed it with the bathing of the water in the saying,

b. RSV: That he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

c. ASV: That he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word,

d. Darby Translation: In order that he might sanctify it, purifying it by the washing of water by the word,

1. “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”

a. That [Strong: 2443 hína, hin'-ah; probably from the same as the former part of G1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare G3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):—albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]

b. [Strong: 846 autós, ow-tos'; from the particle αὖ aû (perhaps akin to the base of G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:—her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

c. he might sanctify [Strong: 37 hagiázō, hag-ee-ad'-zo; from G40; to make holy, i.e. (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate:—hallow, be holy, sanctify.]

d. and cleanse it [Strong: 2511 katharízō, kath-ar-id'-zo; from G2513; to cleanse (literally or figuratively):—(make) clean(-se), purge, purify.]

e. with the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

f. washing [Strong: 3067 loutrón, loo-tron'; from G3068; a bath, i.e. (figuratively), baptism:—washing.]

g. of water [Strong: 5204 hýdōr, hoo'-dore; from the base of G5205; water (as if rainy) literally or figuratively:—water.]

h. by [Strong: 1722 en, en; a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between G1519 and G1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:—about, after, against, + almost, × altogether, among, × as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), × mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, × outwardly, one, × quickly, × shortly, (speedi-)ly, × that, × there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). i. the word [Strong: 4487 rhēma, hray'-mah; from G4483; an utterance (individually, collectively or specially),; by implication, a matter or topic (especially of narration, command or dispute); with a negative naught whatever:—+ evil, + nothing, saying, word.]

    

1). This cleansing is referring to us being cleansed by our obedience to the word of God.

a). Psalm 119:9 Wherewithall shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.

b). Jeremiah 4:14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?

2). The laver was a type and foreshadow of the priesthood of the believer in the New Covenant.

a). Exodus 30:17-21 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

30:18 Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein.

30:19 For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat:

30:20 When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the Lord:

30:21 So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.

b). Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
