Ephesians 6:4

Ephesians 6:4

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

a. YLT: And the fathers! provoke not your children, but nourish them in the instruction and admonition of the Lord.

b. ASV: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord.

c. Darby Translation: And ye fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.

1. “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [ye] fathers [Strong: 3962 patḗr, pat-ayr'; apparently a primary word; a "father" (literally or figuratively, near or more remote):—father, parent.]

c. provoke…to wrath  [Strong: 3949 parorgízō, par-org-id'-zo; from G3844 and G3710; to anger alongside, i.e. enrage:—anger, provoke to wrath.]

d. not [Strong: 3361 mḗ, may; a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas G3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:—any but (that), × forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

e. your [Strong: 5216 hymōn, hoo-mone'; genitive case of G5210; of (from or concerning) you:—ye, you, your (own, -selves).]

f. children [Strong: 5043 téknon, tek'-non; from the base of G5098; a child (as produced):—child, daughter, son.]

2. “…but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

a. but [Strong: allá, al-lah'; neuter plural of G243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):—and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. bring…up [Strong: 1625 ektréphō, ek-tref'-o; from G1537 and G5142; to rear up to maturity, i.e. (genitive case) to cherish or train:—bring up, nourish.]

c. them [Strong: 846 autós, ow-tos'; from the particle αὖ aû (perhaps akin to the base of G109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative G1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:—her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

g. admonition [Strong:3559 nouthesía, noo-thes-ee'-ah; from G3563 and a derivative of G5087; calling attention to, i.e. (by implication) mild rebuke or warning:—admonition.]

h. [of the] Lord [Strong: 2962 kýrios, koo'-ree-os; from κῦρος kŷros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):—God, Lord, master, Sir.]
