Ephesians 5:15

Ephesians 5:15

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

a. YLT: See, then, how exactly ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise,

b. RSV: Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,

c. ASV: Look therefore carefully how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise;

d. Darby Translation: See therefore how ye walk carefully, not as unwise but as wise,

1. “See then that ye walk circumspectly…”

a. See [Strong: 991 blépō, blep'-o; a primary verb; to look at (literally or figuratively):—behold, beware, lie, look (on, to), perceive, regard, see, sight, take heed.]

b. then [Strong: 3767 oûn, oon; apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:—and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]

c. that [Strong: 4459 pōs, poce; adverb from the base of G4226; an interrogative particle of manner; in what way? (sometimes the question is indirect, how?); also as exclamation, how much!:—how, after (by) what manner (means), that. (Occasionally unexpressed in English).]

d. ye walk [Strong: 4043 peripatéō, per-ee-pat-eh'-o; from G4012 and G3961; to tread all around, i.e. walk at large (especially as proof of ability); figuratively, to live, deport oneself, follow (as a companion or votary):—go, be occupied with, walk (about).]

e. circumspectly [Strong: 199 akribōs, ak-ree-boce'; adverb from the same as G196; exactly:—circumspectly, diligently, perfect(-ly).]

2. “…not as fools, but as wise,”

a. not [Strong: 3361 mḗ, may; a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas G3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:—any but (that), × forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

b. as [Strong: 5613 hōs, hoce; probably adverb of comparative from G3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):—about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, × with all speed.]

c. fools [Strong: 781 ásophos, as'-of-os; from G1 (as a negative particle) and G4680; unwise:—fool.]

d. but [Strong: 235 allá, al-lah'; neuter plural of G243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):—and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

e. as [Strong: 5613 hōs, hoce; probably adverb of comparative from G3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):—about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, × with all speed.]

f. wise [Strong: 4680 sophós, sof-os'; akin to σαφής saphḗs (clear); wise (in a most general application):—wise.]

1). Unwise are defined as those who do not understand what the will of the Lord is.

a). Ephesians 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
