1 Timothy 4:16

Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

a. ASV: Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee.

  

b. YLT: Take heed to thyself, and to the teaching; remain in them, for this thing doing, both thyself thou shalt save, and those hearing thee.

d. Amplified Bible Classic:  Look well to yourself [to your own personality] and to [your] teaching; persevere in these things [hold to them], for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

1. “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them…”

a. Take heed [Strong: 1907 epéchō, ep-ekh'-o; from G1909 and G2192; to hold upon, i.e. (by implication) to retain; (by extension) to detain; (with implication, of G3563) to pay attention to:—give (take) heed unto, hold forth, mark, stay.]

b. [unto] thyself [Strong: 4572 seautoû, seh-ow-too'; genitive case from G4571 and G846, also dative case of the same, σεαυτῷ seautōi seh-ow-to', and accusative case σεαυτόν seautón seh-ow-ton', likewise contracted σαυτοῦ sautoû sow-too', σαυτῷ sautōi sow-to', and σαυτόν sautón sow-ton', respectively; of (with, to) thyself:—thee, thine own self, (thou) thy(-self).]

g. j. hear [Strong: 191 akoúō, ak-oo'-o; a primary verb; to hear (in various senses):—give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.

k. thee [Strong: 4675 soû, soo; genitive case of G4771; of thee, thy:—X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.]

1). In the previous verse Paul exhorted Timothy to meditate on the word, to give himself wholly to it and as a result his spiritual growth would be obvious to all. In this verse he is continuing the exhortation. He exhorts him to continue in the word and in doing so he would save himself and them that hears him.

a). Jesus said that if we continue in his word we would be disciples indeed and in our deeds.

8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

b). We must be doers of the word and walk in obedience to it if we expect the benefits of salvation.

(1) James 1:21-25 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
